The Sweetwater High School golf team shot a 668 total this past weekend at the Andrews Boys Classic to place seventh out of 20 teams.
Sweetwater, which hosts its annual invitational tournament starting Friday at Sweetwater Country Club, was tied for ninth after an opening 335 but moved up two places after a 333 on the final day at Andrews.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s track teams went to Snyder to compete at a season-opening meet on Friday.
The SHS girls scored 52 points for a fifth-place finish in their division and were led by senior Jayci Shelton, who won both hurdles and placed in two other events.
Just slightly more than a week after devastating wildfire ripped through West Texas, forecasters are predicting similar conditions on Tuesday and encouraging residents in the affected area to be prepared to evacuate.
First Baptist Church in Sweetwater held a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house on Sunday afternoon, March 6, for its newly remodeled Education Building. The updated facility boasts amenities such as an elevator which makes the building accessible for everyone and the restoration of the original stairwell. Though the building was constructed over 90 years ago, the updates now allow the church to stand ready and capable for the future.
Errica Green, 29, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 7, 2011, at Mitchell County Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Kiker-Seale Chapel. Rev. Faye Ross will officiate services. Interment will follow at Mitchell County Cemetery. All arrangements are under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home in Colorado City.
Itâ€™s not even mid-March, and Sweetwaterâ€™s baseball team has already equalled its win total for the entire 2010 season. The Mustangs can exceed it by defeating Midland Greenwood today at Newman Park starting at 6 p.m.
The Mustangs are off to an 8-2-1 start after going 8-21 a year ago, and five of this seasonâ€™s victories â€” including four this past weekend at Sweetwaterâ€™s annual Wood Bat Classic â€” have come in the friendly confines of Newman Park.
Sweetwater finished 4-1-1 at its three-day event that ended Saturday.
After an 11-1 loss at San Angelo Lake View on Saturday, the Sweetwater High School softball team will try to rebound today when it goes to Colorado City for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
A nine-run, second-inning uprising by Lake View turned Saturdayâ€™s game into a blowout as Sweetwater fell to 6-4. The Lady Mustangs managed to avoid a shutout by scoring in the fifth inning, but still lost by the 10-run rule. Kinsey Browning, Jackie Carey and Suede Shirley had hits and Taylor McKoy, Alicia Finn and Maty Montgomery pitched. Sweetwater committed four errors.
The 2011 Junior Swine Show was held on February 3-4, at the Fort Worth Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Reserve Champion Yorkshire Swine this year was exhibited by Blake Cumbie with Sweetwater, FFA.Â Blake is an eighth grader at Sweetwater Middle School. He is shown with his father, Dennis Cumbie.

The Taylor County Vet Center is branching out and offering counseling services to veterans in the Sweetwater community. Since December, a counselor has been making weekly visits to Sweetwater each Thursday to serve veterans in a local capacity.
