TNB supports Wounded Warriors

Texas National Bank (TNB) in Sweetwater is joining efforts in a national cause — supporting our wounded warriors.
Texas National Bank Assistant Vice President, Liz Howard, as a part of a management development program which promotes team building, is in charge of the local campaign to involve the community to raise money for the national program. This campaign will benefit the Wounded Warriors Alliance.

Municipal Band looking for more members

If you enjoy playing music but haven’t had a chance to play in a while, then dust off your horn and practice with the Sweetwater Municipal Band. Their membership has gotten a little low, and they would love to have new members to help keep the band alive for the community.

Local TxDOT employee receives award

Danny Escobar, right, maintenance tech in the Nolan County maintenance section, is presented a Certificate of Service by Lauren Garduño, P.E. Escobar, a five-year employee with the Texas Department of Transportation, was honored for his longevity during a recent supervisors meeting in Abilene. In addition to the framed certificate, he received a five-year service pin and a black leatherette portfolio, his gift of choice. Garduño is the Abilene District Engineer.

Rudolph E. (Rudy) Black, age 77, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at his residence. 
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Homer Reddic, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Fires continue in Nolan County

On Thursday morning, Sweetwater firefighters responded to a fire at the cotton compress on Alabama Avenue (shown). Several cotton bales were on fire and the blaze is still under investigation according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
Also, on Wednesday morning, Sweetwater firefighters responded to a grass fire at Lake Sweetwater. The cause of the fire that burned one acre of land is under investigation according to Madden.

Bobby Bridger to perform

The next live music performance at JavaJax will take place Saturday, June 18, with Bobby Bridger performing his "Seekers of the Fleece" show. There will be a steak dinner, served at 7 p.m. and the show will be at 8 p.m. Cost for the dinner and show is $24, with the show only for $12.

Ribbon cutting held for Nolan Nursing and Rehab

A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house was held at Nolan Nursing and Rehabilitation at their new location on the east end of Sweetwater by the Texas Department of Transportation office off of Interstate 20. The new facility is licensed for 96 residents. Among the four wings, there are six private rooms and the rest are semi-private rooms. Each wing dead-ends into a sitting area, which has telephones, plasma televisions and couches. Each room has a bed, a chair and a wardrobe closet.

TXU Energy has launched a new electricity plan in Texas for customers looking for a plan that does not require a deposit.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued five citations and made two arrests on June 15, 2011.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 1400 block of E. Broadway.
• Family violence assault — 1300 block of James.

Arrested by SPD:
• Arthur John, 41 — Warrants.
• Jesus Rodriguez, 27 — Driving while license invalid.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served three civil papers and made four arrests on June 15, 2011.

Tennis, golf clinics next week

June 17, 2011

A Mustang Tennis Clinic for students completing grades 3-8 will be held Monday through Thursday, June 20-23, at the Sweetwater High School tennis courts. The hours of the clinic will be 8-11 a.m. Students will need to bring a tennis racquet, water bottle and sun screen. The cost of the clinic will be $35.
