Andrea L. Baucom, age 60, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away Friday, April 1, 2011 at her residence. 
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Garden of Memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 

Local RC&D program facing elimination

As the U.S. Congress deals with the budget and spending deficit in Washington, cuts begin to hit home in Sweetwater. Such may be the case for the Big Country RC&D Area, headquartered here in Sweetwater and serving 12 counties in the area according to Secretary/Treasurer for the organization, Tom Henderson of Nolan County. This local not-for-profit organization began operations here in 1991, after being recognized and authorized by the Secretary of Agriculture as a viable, organized rural, community development organization. 

Nuclear incidents to be discussed

Being ready to respond with assistance in any emergency situation is the job of one local volunteer organization, Big Country Medical Reserve Corps (BCMRC). Knowing who to go to for expertise in various emergency situations is also important. That is why BCMRC is hosting representatives with Ludlum Measurements, who will conduct training on the basics of radiation safety during the BCMRC’s next meeting.

TSTC offers continuing education classes

In response to community requests, Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater will begin offering continuing education classes. The Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Excel and Basic Networking Skills classes are available to the entire community.
"Scheduling and curriculum will be flexible to meet the needs of our community," said TSTC Interim President Gail Lawrence. There are basic and advanced classes in each subject and the students can self-assess their skill level.
Local businesses are jumping in on the action by signing up their employees for classes.

Ribbon cutting at Sweetwater Healthcare

Sweetwater Healthcare Center recently held an open house and the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors were also on hand to have a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new addition to the nursing home facility. The outdoor secured unit features sitting areas, walking areas and a spacious patio with several sculptures.

The SPD received 15, 911 calls.

• Forgery — 200 block of E. Texas.

Arrested by SPD:
• Joseph Bugarin, 31 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on March 31, 2011.

Arrested by DPS:
• Bryon Craig McClain, 26, of Abilene — Possession of marijuana.
• Kristopher Adam Shultz, 22, of Abilene — Possession of marijuana.

• Brandon Bugarin, 20 — Driving while intoxicated.
• Robert Scott Plemons, 27 — Public intoxication and Class C assault.
• Dalton Dunnagan, 21 — Public intoxication.

SHS teams host Snyder in key 5-3A action today

They both began four-game homestands against district competition by losing to first-place squads from Brownwood earlier this week. As a result, the Sweetwater High School baseball and softball teams will have a little added pressure to win when they resume their homestands by hosting Snyder today.

Optimistic financial outlook for RPMH

The Nolan County Hospital District (NCHD) Board of Directors met for its regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, March 28, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
At the meeting, the board opted to cancel the 2011 NCHD Board of Directors election. Because the candidates were unopposed in three positions — in Districts 3, 4 and 7, the board approved the cancellation.
