TxDOT approves super-heavy permits to haul transformers across Texas

AUSTIN—Three long-haul rigs, each loaded with a transformer, are journeying across the state to meet a shipping deadline at the Port of Houston.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) approved super-heavy permits for a Texas company to haul the loads at gross vehicle weights of 510,000, 430,000 and 420,000 pounds. The transformers are headed to Japan to aid in disaster relief in the aftermath of a destructive earthquake and tsunami.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on March 29, 2011.

The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served one civil paper and made two arrests on March 29, 2011.

Lions take advantage of mistakes to beat S’water

A malfunction with the lights at the Newman Park high school field prevented Sweetwater from playing its District 5-3A baseball game against Brownwood Tues-day night.
But when the game was finally played Wednesday, it was a different kind of Sweetwater malfunction that helped the Lions leave town with a 9-2 victory.
Four Mustang errors al-lowed Brownwood (2-0 in district) to score seven un-earned runs off Sweetwater pitcher Kris Mayes, who took the loss despite strik-ing out 12 in seven innings as his team fell to 0-2 in district and 10-12-1 overall.

Roscoe, Highland JV boys track results

The Roscoe JV boys had 130 points for a second-place finish and Highland’s JV boys scored 44 points for a fourth-place team finish at the Roby track meet.

Notorious crack cocaine distribution house demolished

Tuesday, March 29, 2011, marked the end of an era for a south Sweetwater neighborhood. Neighbors watched as a notorious crack cocaine distribution house was completely demolished at 1110 Runnels Street in Sweetwater. Sheriff David Warren called this the location of one of the most prolific crack cocaine selling operations he has seen.

RPMH honors doctors on a special day

Each day, the doctors at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) go to work to make the community a healthier place. In commemoration of National Doctor’s Day on March 30, RPMH wants to recognize the doctors who dedicate their lives to ensure the people of the community are in the best health possible.
“Doctors are more than caregivers—they’re heroes,” said Donna Boatright, chief executive officer of RPMH. “These men and women dedicate their lives to the practice of medicine, and our community continues to thrive as a result.”

Masons host dinner benefitting WTCAC

Sweetwater Masonic Lodge #571 hosted its third dinner benefitting the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
Along with the dinner was the silent auction held before and during the dinner. The dinner consisted of barbecue sausage and chicken with all the trimmings, all cooked by Masons and served by WTCAC board members. Entertainment was provided at the dinner by cowboy poet Charlie Davis and Rodger Lister. Flags were presented by Sweetwater commanders.

(Glenn) Don Land (1942-2011)

March 30, 2011

Don was survived by his beautiful wife of 41 years, Linda Land; his mother Nona Land; sister Sandra; brother-in-law, Merrill; daughter, Donita Mattern; son-in-law and very good friend Dan Mattern; nieces, Kimberly and Phyllis; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Don was born to Nona and Shelby Land in Brownwood, Texas on Oct. 24, 1942. He was a very well-liked football player in Brownwood and Sweetwater. At the age of 18 years he bravely joined the Navy and married his first wife, Jean. Together they had their only child, daughter Donita, who was born in 1962.
