Any students looking to apply to the University of Texas at Austin in the future may have another outlet of financial assistance for college from a local source.
Billy Roy Mathews has lived in Sweetwater his entire life and is a graduate from the Austin school. In 2010, a scholarship program was started as a tribute to Mathews to award one honor student accepted to the university a $2,000 scholarship.
Lucinda L. (Cindy) Wiltse, age 58, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.Â
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Lamar Street Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Payne officiating.Â Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.Â Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.Â
Cindy was born May 14, 1953, in Albia, Iowa to John Irwin (Jack) and Georgeann Waller Lathen.Â She married Philip Dean Wiltse on Nov. 3, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nevada.Â She was a homemaker.Â
Tracy Lee Turner, age 38, of Maryneal, Texas, and formerly Brady, passed away Friday, July 8, 2011, at her residence in Maryneal. She was born on Oct. 31, 1972, in Mason, Texas to Edward Lee Keith and Glenda Beth (Crisp) Keith. She married Charles Patrick Turner on April 15, 2000 in Menard. She was a homemaker and attended the Maryneal Baptist Church.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas increased one cent since last week according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. The national average increased four cents.
The statewide average is 13 cents less than the national average.Â The statewide average is $3.45 and the national average is $3.58.Â
Reserved season football tickets for the 2011 season will be up for renewal to current option holders beginning Monday, July 18, through Friday, Aug. 5. Tickets may be purchased at the Sweetwater ISD Administration office. Tickets are $30 for five home games. Reserved ticket sales for the general public will go on sale on Monday, Aug. 8. The last day to purchase season tickets will be Friday, Aug. 19. Tickets will be sold during regular business hours. First Financial Bank had a hot dog cookout at the motor bank on Friday, July 1, to show customers their appreciation and to celebrate Independence Day. Kirby Andrews and Rodney Foster grilled hot dogs for the event. The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 47 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on July 6, 2011.

Maryneal, TX â€” Hettie Taylor, 70, passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at her home in Maryneal. At her request, graveside services only will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger, Texas on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 10 a.m. directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
The family visitation was from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday evening, July 10, 2011 at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 East Third in Sweetwater, Texas.
Hettie was born to Zid (Nanny) and Mildred (Dobbie) Herring on Feb. 9, 1941, in Ballinger, Texas. She married Jackie H. Taylor on Aug. 1, 1958. He preceded her in death April 7, 2000.

On Thursday morning, July 7, a custody hearing was held for the placement of four year old Angel Flores at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Nolan County Court at Law Judge David Hall presided over the hearing, determining that until further notice, Angel would stay in the custody of a foster family, which is being overseen by Child Protective Services (CPS).
