Representative King receives committee assignments

Speaker Joe Straus announced the Texas House committee assignments for the 82nd Legislative Session. Rep. Susan L. King was honored to once again be selected to serve on the Appropriations and Public Health Committees. In addition, Rep. King was also appointed to serve on the House Administration Committee.

Sweetwater ISD's 2010 NCEA higher performing schools recognized

The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), a department of ACT, Inc., recognized Sweetwater Independent School District for having two schools in their district make the 2010 NCEA Higher Performing Schools List. The following schools received the honor and Higher Performing (HP) recognition in the following areas:
• Southeast Elementary School, Math and Reading - Higher Performing in all Areas.
• Sweetwater Intermediate School, Math and Reading.

Dorothy Ann "Granny" Heath
Funeral services for Dorothy Ann "Granny" Heath, 71, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. Awake and visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Heath died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

JV girls defeat Wylie, finish with 23-2 record

Sweetwater’s JV girls basketball team beat Wylie, 34-23, here Tuesday to finish its 2010-11 season with a sparkling 23-2 record. Sweetwater was 5-1 in dis-trict, the only loss to Wylie.
Janell Walker’s 12 points and Shelby Cason’s 11 led Sweetwater, while Elise Lawrence had seven points and Kathleen Campbell and Destiny Osteen two. Sweet-water outscored Wylie 11-3 in the final period after leading by just three, 23-20.

Stamford holds off Roscoe

The results were a lot closer the second time around. However, Stamford’s basketball teams still held off Roscoe on Tuesday in District 9-A, Division I action.
Stamford’s boys won 63-51 to improve to 9-0 while dropping Roscoe to 5-4 with one game left. Caden Smith had 25 points and Cody Graham added 12 to pace the Plowboys, who are tied with Munday for third place. The teams meet Friday in Munday, and the winner will claim the No. 3 playoff berth.

Sweetwater golf teams do well in season-opening tournaments

The Sweetwater girls took third at Wylie’s event while the Sweetwater boys sent two teams to Snyder’s tour-nament and placed fifth and third, respectively, in sea-son-opening high school golf action.
The Sweetwater girls shot 388 at Wylie for a close third-place finish. The Lady Mustangs trailed first-place Brownwood (384) by just four strokes and second-place Cooper (385) by just three shots, while nudging out Graham (389) for the No. 3 spot.

City election set for May 14

The City Commission met for their regular session meeting on Tuesday morning, Feb. 8 at City Hall.
Several items for approval were presented at the meeting. Among them was the ordinance ordering for an election to be held on May 14. During this city election, voters would be electing for mayor and city commissioners in Precincts 1 and 3. The ordinance was approved.

Second Annual Ridin’ for Cash Bull Bash to be a bigger event

The second annual “Ridin’ for Cash” Bull Bash will be an even larger event than last year, with many vendor booths being set up before the action begins. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at the Nolan County Coliseum. Doors will open at 5 p.m. so that those attending will have time to visit vendor booths, the silent auction and the concession stand.
There will be about 30 vendors that will be selling many items including leather goods, jewelry, candles, Scentsy items, clothes, crosses and much more.

Ribbon cutting held for Sweetwater Auto-Tire

Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors were on hand at Sweetwater Auto-Tire on Tuesday for a ribbon cutting and open house for the new business. The business is located at 1509 Lamar Street and provides auto services including oil changes and unlocking vehicles and provides new and used tires including Firestone, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Cooper and more. Owners are Bill and Candace Jones and the manager is Manny Gutierrez. They can be reached at 325-236-8180.
