Nuclear incidents to be discussed

Being ready to respond with assistance in any emergency situation is the job of one local volunteer organization, Big Country Medical Reserve Corps (BCMRC). Knowing who to go to for expertise in various emergency situations is also important. That is why BCMRC is hosting representatives with Ludlum Measurements, who will conduct training on the basics of radiation safety during the BCMRC’s next meeting.

TSTC offers continuing education classes

In response to community requests, Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater will begin offering continuing education classes. The Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Excel and Basic Networking Skills classes are available to the entire community.
"Scheduling and curriculum will be flexible to meet the needs of our community," said TSTC Interim President Gail Lawrence. There are basic and advanced classes in each subject and the students can self-assess their skill level.
Local businesses are jumping in on the action by signing up their employees for classes.

Ribbon cutting at Sweetwater Healthcare

April 2, 2011

Sweetwater Healthcare Center recently held an open house and the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors were also on hand to have a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new addition to the nursing home facility. The outdoor secured unit features sitting areas, walking areas and a spacious patio with several sculptures.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 44 calls for service, issued six citations and made one arrest on March 31, 2011.

The SPD received 15, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Forgery — 200 block of E. Texas.

Arrested by SPD:
• Joseph Bugarin, 31 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on March 31, 2011.

Arrested by DPS:
• Bryon Craig McClain, 26, of Abilene — Possession of marijuana.
• Kristopher Adam Shultz, 22, of Abilene — Possession of marijuana.

The SPD received 35, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Assault — 1200 block of Ragland.

Arrested by SPD:
• Brandon Bugarin, 20 — Driving while intoxicated.
• Robert Scott Plemons, 27 — Public intoxication and Class C assault.
• Dalton Dunnagan, 21 — Public intoxication.

SHS teams host Snyder in key 5-3A action today

April 1, 2011

They both began four-game homestands against district competition by losing to first-place squads from Brownwood earlier this week. As a result, the Sweetwater High School baseball and softball teams will have a little added pressure to win when they resume their homestands by hosting Snyder today.

Optimistic financial outlook for RPMH

The Nolan County Hospital District (NCHD) Board of Directors met for its regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, March 28, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
At the meeting, the board opted to cancel the 2011 NCHD Board of Directors election. Because the candidates were unopposed in three positions — in Districts 3, 4 and 7, the board approved the cancellation.

EFC sending mission team to Haiti

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the nation of Haiti, killing thousands of men, women and children and leaving more than 3 million lives in need of immediate assistance. Many children have lost their parents. Families are torn apart. A city of over 1 million is left in shambles. Though a year has come and gone since the incident, relief work is far from over. Many homes remain piles of rubble. Hundreds of thousands of families live in tents made of tarp and scrap metal. Food is still scarce, jobs are even more difficult to find, and there doesn’t seem to be any way out.

FBC students score Superior in Bible Drill

First Baptist Church held its church's Bible Drill on Sunday, March 27, after the morning service. Cheyanna and Brooklynn Petty, daughters of Rolan and Leigh Petty, both scored Superior. On Sunday, April 3, at 4 p.m., they will drill in Rolling Plains Network Drill. It will be held at First Baptist Church on the second floor conference room.
