An accident occurred early Thursday morning, due to a patch of black ice on the road. The accident occurred on 126 northeast of the city of Nolan. The vehicle struck black ice which caused the driver of the truck to lose control. Only one person was involved and was able to walk away with only minor injuries.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s graduation Blowout is an annual event for all high school students. Blowout is held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex following the graduation ceremonies and is an event full of fun, food and games. Blowout was conceived to provide an alcohol-free alternative to the traditional drinking parties that seem to have become the accepted form of celebration following graduation. Far too often, the future potential of young adult lives and the happiness of special events have been marred by the tragedy of drinking and driving accidents.
The 0-2 Sweetwater boys will try again for their first district win, while the 1-2 girls shoot for two straight when they host Brownwood today at Mustang Gym.
The girls (16-12 overall) who tip off at 6 p.m., need just one more win to assure themselves of finishing over .500 for the first time in five years. Sweetwater crushed Big Spring 59-35 this past Tuesday as Kinsey Brown-ing and Taylor McKoy each had 16 points. Brownwood is 2-1 in District 5-3A play.
Several Nolan County area basket-ball teams play key games today.
In District 9-A, Division I, the Roscoe boys (2-1) can pull into a tie for the district lead with a road win at Stamford (3-0). Roscoe defeated Hamlin, 56-38, on Tuesday as Caden Smith had 25 points and Juan Solis 14 to pace the win. Roscoe is currently tied with Haskell for second place. The Roscoe girls, who are 1-3 in district, also play at Stamford today.
The Highland boys and girls also have very important games today as they host Roby.

After two national agencies arrived to help find missing thirteen-year-old Hailey Dunn, a good number of volunteers responded to the call.
About 40 people showed up to the Colorado City Civic Center on Wednesday morning to help the KlaasKids Foundation and the Laura Recovery Center with law enforcement search efforts.
The foundations taught volunteers tips on what to do and not to do, as well as different search tactics. The search was conducted within the city limits of Colorado City, where search parties were formed and identified with neon orange vests.
The stars will come out on Saturday night, at the Sweetwater High School auditorium.
The 20th Annual Star Search will kick off at 6 p.m.. The entire community is encouraged to come out and show their support.
"This is our single, biggest event of the year as Kiwanis," Bill Haley said.
This year, there are ten elementary division acts, six intermediate acts, six middle school acts and four high school acts. All contestants will begin rehearsals at 7:45 a.m., on Saturday morning and around 5:15 contestants will gather in preparation for their performance.
Cancer can cause emotional and financial burdens; Cancer Services Network is there to try and ease those burdens.
Cancer Services Network is one of the nine agencies served by the Nolan County United Way. According to the executive director of Cancer Services Network, Nancy Estes, their main goal is to increase survivorship rates among those stricken by cancer.
Juanita Louise â€śNitaâ€ť Clayton, age 89, passed away at Brownwood Regional Medical Hospital in Brownwood, Texas on Wednesday, January 12, 2011.
Family visitation will be 6-8 PM Friday, January 14, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, Odessa, Texas, with Brother Bob Blazek officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be her six grandsons, Ramsey Fowler, Brent Clayton, Todd Pruett, Will Pruett, Eric Crane and Larry Crane.
Roscoeâ€™s Caden Smith has recently received more postseason football honors.
Smith, a 6-3, 240-pound senior, was chosen this week by the Abilene Reporter-News to its All-Big Country Class 1A Football Team as a defensive lineman after a season in which he record-ed 109 tackles. In addition, Smith received honorable mention to the team on offense at quarterback.
