Kelley enjoys big night for Mustangs, but Wylie’s 12 treys too much for SW in District 5-3A opener

2-point loss to San Angelo Lake View at home just 72 hours earlier and 13 defeats in 15 games since the start of December, the Sweetwater boys basketball team came in as a huge underdog at Wylie for its District 5-3A opener on Friday night.
But while the final result was a 79-55 loss, the short-handed Mustangs (6-15) not only showed plenty of fight but got excellent games from their top two scorers, 6-8 post Paxton Kelley and 5-9 guard Taylor Jones.

Two retire from library service

The County-City Library recently celebrated two employees who are moving on after a combined 53 years of hard work.
On Thursday morning, Jan. 13, Liz Sands and Barbara Keeney were recognized for their service and were sent off into retirement in style with a party in their honor. Guests enjoyed coffee, cookies and other goodies, with numerous leaders from the community on hand to join the celebration. Even a group from the Abilene library attended, where both Sands and Keeney were formerly employed. Gifts, cards and other well wishes to the recipients were on display in the Community Room.

SHS receives donations for turf, scoreboard

Next season, the Sweetwater Mustangs will be stomping on new turf, thanks to another generous donation from past Sweetwater High School graduate, Larry Durham.
Durham is a member of the class of 1961 and past owner of Durham Transportation, a private school bus company.
"We had been saving and preparing for this, but thanks to the generous and much appreciated donation, this improvement will be done without having to dip into those funds," Sweetwater Independent School District superintendant Terry Pittman said.

Videos Appear to Show Adkins Smoking Pot, Posing with Knives

Two internet videos uncovered by users of the "Find Hailey Dunn" and "Help Find Hailey Dunn" Facebook pages appear to show the boyfriend of Hailey Dunn's mother using illegal drugs, cursing, and posing with knives.

Adkins is believed to be the last person to see the 13-year-old alive before she vanished from the small town of Colorado City on December 27, 2010.

One video links back to someone claiming to be a relative of Adkins. It appears the original copy of the second video has been removed by the poster.

Retired fireman laid to rest

A funeral service was held for retired Sweetwater firefighter Loyd Levens on Thursday. On the way to Sweetwater Cemetery, Loyd got to take his final ride in Sweetwater's newest fire truck and was honored by Sweetwater firefighters. On Oct. 23, 1952, Loyd moved to Sweetwater and went to work for the Sweetwater Fire Department. After 29 years, he retired in 1981. “Loyd Levens was a fireman who retired before I was out of high school but was a great fireman and nice guy," said Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. "I had the privilege of helping him after a fall and had met him a few other times.

Stangs tip off district at Wylie

Starting today, the games that really count for the Sweetwater boys basketball team begin.
And no one can ac-cuse the Mustangs of easing into district play as they go to Wylie for their 5-3A opener that will tip off at 7:30 p.m.

Mike Welch on list of 2011 Big Country HOF inductees

ABILENE — Mike Welch — a two-time all-stater at Sweetwater High School who helped lead the Mustangs to a state championship in 1985 and later was a four-year starter at Baylor University — is among a group of 10 former athletes, coaches, officials and sports writers who have been selected to the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame.

Lub. Coronado names Jackson as its new coach

LUBBOCK — After spending the past two years in the Metroplex, ex-Sweetwater head football coach Kent Jackson has returned to his West Texas roots and a team known as the Mustangs.
Jackson, who coached at Sweetwater from 2001 through 2008 before taking a similar position at Frisco Heritage, was hired on Thursday as head coach at Class 5A Lubbock Coronado.

Youth group donates to Women’s Resource Center

The Women's Resource Center in Sweetwater recently received a large donation of many items for infants.
Every holiday, the youth at First Baptist Church in Roscoe participate in a community service project. This year, church member and Women's Resource Center volunteer Gaynell Harrell suggested that the students donate to the center.

NCF donates to Goodfellows

Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board recently announced the awarding of $1,000 to Goodfellows. In making the announcement and presenting agency representative Ken Becker this assistance, Jerry Riggs, President of the NCF, stressed the importance of supporting worthwhile agencies as they serve vital needs for Nolan County residents. Riggs also stated that the NCF will be identifying other special needs and giving additional financial assistance in the near future. Serving the NCF board with Riggs are Glenn Bennett, Ronnie Cox, Bill Johnson, Rod Wetsel, Ronald Williams, J.V.
