The Woman's Forum is sponsoring a $500 cash Christmas shopping spree raffle. Tickets are $1 each and may be purchased from any Woman's Forum member, by calling 235-8756 or at the Sweetwater Elks Lodge Annual Christmas Craft Show at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The event is open to the public starting Saturday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. and running until 6 p.m., and on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The drawing for the prize will take place on Sunday, Dec. 4, on the last day of the Christmas Crafts Show, at 1 p.m.
David Warren will seek another term as Sheriff of Nolan County. Sheriff Warren was elected in 2008 and took office as Nolan County Sheriff on Jan. 1, 2009. Warren has served as Sheriff for the past three years and will run for re-election in 2012. â€śThe current Sheriffâ€™s Office is one that is centered on service and based upon integrity and professionalism. My staff and I would appreciate the continued opportunity to work hard for the citizens of this county and see that it stays that way.â€ť stated Warren.
The West Texas Children's Advocacy Center has once again partnered with Wal-Mart to provide a way for many children in the area to have a better Christmas. This year's tree is called Amy's Angel Tree, in honor of Amy Rainey, a victim of domestic abuse. Amy first brought the idea of an Angel Tree to the WTCAC eight years ago. She knew the value of giving during the holiday season.
Sara "Abigail" Lynch, daughter of Ralph and Kelly Lynch of Sweetwater, Texas, has been selected as a candidate in the 2011 Miss Teen of Texas Scholarship and Recognition Pageant to be held at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel in San Antonio, Nov. 25-27.
The winner of the pageant competition will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship and a $500 U.S. Savings Bond. The new State Titleholder will also be eligible to compete for the National Title of Miss Teen of America and vie for additional scholarships, awards and prizes.
John Glenn Thompson, 69, met his Lord and Savior face-to-face on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at Southern Hills Church of Christ, with burial to follow at Texas State Veterans Cemetery with Phil Ware and John Risse officiating. The family will be receiving friends at North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange Street, on Sunday, Nov. 27, from 2-4 p.m.
Black Friday crowds gathered early in Sweetwater with people looking for great deals during the holiday season. Radio Shack, Sears and Bealls also opened early on Black Friday.

On a clear November day in 1911 the news of Robert Fowlerâ€™s approach in the Cole Flyer preceded him causing great excitement in the small West Texas town of Sweetwater. In fact, a holiday had been declared for the occasion and schools were even closed so everyone could witness the incredible landing of an airplane in an open field about a mile south of town.
Kyle Blaylock, age 39 of Bartlett, Texas, (former resident of Odessa, Texas), passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at Blackwell First Baptist Church with Rev. John Curry officiating. Burial will follow at Blackwell Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of
Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Dorothy M. Redden 84, loving mother and grandmother, of Midland passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011.
Dorothy was born on Dec. 15, 1926, to Archie Q. Self and Ella Callen (England) Self in Sweetwater, Texas. There was nothing that Dorothy held closer to her heart than her family and her faith. Dorothy was a member of Kelview Heights Baptist Church of Midland and a former member of Broadway Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Texas. She was also a member of AT&T Pioneers.
