Lady Stangs score season-high 64 points against Golden Tors to record fourth straight victory

The big games aren’t here yet, but the Sweetwater girls basketball team is starting to get used to winning.
The Lady Mustangs picked up their fourth straight victory on Tuesday at Mustang Gym, pulling away in the second half to beat Lamesa 64-46 and improving their season record to 10-8.
The 64 points — 40 coming in the second half — were a season high for the team, which won its last three games at the Stanton tourney over the weekend for the consolation title.

Mustangs hold off Bucks 36-33 to end five-game losing skid

It wasn’t easy, or pretty, but the Sweetwater boys basketball team did just enough things right against Breckenridge to finally end a five-game losing streak here Thursday.
After blowing an eight-point halftime lead, Sweet-water (5-6) scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to break a 26-26 tie and still led by five, 36-31, with two minutes left. But the win wasn’t secure until one of Breckenridge’s players missed a 3-point attempt in the final seconds.

Highland girls win big in district opener

The Highland girls bas-ketball team opened district play with 43-18 victory over Hermleigh on Tuesday.
The Lady Hornets, who were coming off a second-place finish at their annual Hilltop Classic on Saturday, received 20 points from Callie Sandusky and 11 from Sierra Allen as they improved to 8-7 overall.
Highland was ahead 9-4 after one quarter and 20-10 at halftime, then blanked Hermleigh 13-0 in the third quarter. Beth Richburg had four points, Kara Hughey and Shyan Womack three and Jessica McCain two.

SMS boys win 3-of-4

The Sweetwater Mid-dle School boys went 3-1 against Snyder Monday.
The seventh grade White won 28-19. Isaiah Gonzales and Matthew Trevino had nine points, Deshaun Williams six and Roman Acuna and Adan Sanchez two. The seventh grade Red won 51-27 as Michael Hunt scored 14 points, J’Corey Amos nine, Michael Lawrence seven, Denzell Moore five, Adrian Vizzerra and Hardy Escobar four, Andrew Briley and Mark Lawrence three and Max Gomez two.

Trailblazer Energy Center Receives Final Air Quality Permits

The Commissioners of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) voted unanimously to grant the air quality permits necessary for the Tenaska Trailblazer Energy Center under development near Sweetwater, Texas, to begin construction.
“This is a red letter day, for the project,” Tenaska representative Greg Kunkel, said, in an interview with the Sweetwater Reporter.

Choice Ready Mix opens in Sweetwater

Steve and Toland Smith, two local residents, have opened a new cement company. The first pouring and official opening, of the company took place in Sweetwater Monday morning. The first job will be in a residential area, near the country club. Choice Ready Mix is able to serve a thirty mile radius; from Sweetwater to Abilene. The company will be located in Tye.

Rufus F. Wade, 63, of Kingston and formerly of Sweetwater, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010.
A graveside service of rememberance took place on December 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Westview Cemetery with Rev. Tony McLamb officiating.

Services celebrating the life of Charles Adrian (C.A.) Price will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, at McCoy Funeral Chapel in Sweetwater. Burial will be in Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. Mr. Price passed away on December 14, 2010, at the age of 83.

SHS teams host Lamesa, Breckenridge; Blackwell, Highland girls start district

After road trips to Merkel and Stanton this past week, Sweetwater High School’s varsity basketball teams are both playing at home today. But their opponents will be from different schools. The SHS girls will host Lamesa at 6 p.m. at Mustang Gym, while the SHS boys entertain Breckenridge at 7:30 this evening.
After a 35-30 loss to state-ranked Merkel on Thursday, the Lady Mustangs (9-8) won their last three games at Stanton’s tournament.
