Thelma Pauline Arnold, age 80, of Lubbock, Texas (former resident of Sweetwater, Texas), passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Lakeside Nursing & Rehab in Lubbock, Texas. 
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home with Chaplain Allen McGuire officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. 

Decade of excellence

It seems hard to believe, but there was a time not all that long ago when the Highland girls basketball team struggled mightily to get victories.
During the five seasons from 1995 to 2000, the Lady Hornets won a total of just 15 games, including an 0-21 mark the final year.
But the start of the new millennium also marked a new era for the program.
Under head coach Shea Baucom, Highland sudden-ly turned the corner starting with the 2001-02 season.

Following a third-place finish by the Lady Mustangs this past weekend at Crane’s tournament, Sweetwater’s softball teams are back on the road today for a JV-varsity doubleheader at Hawley starting with the JV game at 6 p.m.

The Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) Board of Directors met on Monday morning, Feb. 14, for its regular session meeting.
Various action items were presented and approved at the meeting. Among them were the financial statements from December 2010. The board was very pleased with the sales tax numbers that were presented in the report and also noted that the numbers were higher from the previous year. Also approved at the meeting were the minutes from the meetings held in January and the payment of accounts payable.

Local receives Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Parker College of Chiropractic

Parker College of Chiropractic presented Nicholas Todd Anthony the Doctor of Chiropractic degree during its 76th graduating class ceremony held at Irving Bible Church in Irving, Texas on Dec. 11, 2010. Dr. Anthony is the son of Steve and Debbie Anthony and is a native of Roscoe, Texas.

Each year Texans are surprised by tornadoes or severe thunderstorms. It is vitally important to have more than one way to receive NWS warnings. You can receive NWS warnings from devices such as your cell phone, smart phone, PC, radio, television or NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards. Some communities, universities and private companies can text or e-mail NWS warnings to your cell phones or telephones. You could search the internet for these private companies and/or you may contact your university and/or local Emergency Management Office to see if they offer this service in your area.

All Smiles visits SISD schools

All Smiles, a group based out of Dallas, was stationed at various Sweetwater schools last week to help bring traveling dental care to Sweetwater ISD students. The company launched their Traveling Miles for Smiles campaign in 2004 in an effort to assist schools, organizations and parents invest in their child's health with on-site dental care. Seeing the great need of a lack in dental care among students, Molly Thomas, SISD Head Nurse stated that the program has been in consideration for some time.

Jimmy Lynn Buckner, 60, of Sweetwater, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
His body was cremated and no services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Peggy Lois Runyard

February 21, 2011

A graveside service for Peggy Lois Runyard, 87, of Lake Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Garden of Memories Cemetery with Mark White officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Runyard died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at The Hoyt House in Sweetwater.

Lavonne H. Terry, 72, of Amarillo died on Friday, February 18, 2011.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. with Dr. Robby Barrett, Minister of Education, First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at the Palava Cemetery in Palava, Texas with William Mayo officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
