A grass fire burned approximately 100 acres of land on Friday afternoon in Nolan County in the northwest portion of Sweetwater according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. Madden stated that the landowner was working on a fence when the grass caught fire. No injuries were reported.
Sweetwater students will now have a new reason to display their showcase smile.
With the help of Molly Thomas, SISD head nurse, a new program will be rolling into town to help kids receive adequate dental care. All Smiles, a group based out of Dallas, will be stationed at various Sweetwater schools. The company launched their Traveling Miles for Smiles campaign in 2004 in an effort to assist schools, organizations and parents invest in their child's health with on-site dental care.

Mr. Daniel L. Marsh, Director of West Texas VA Health Care System, is pleased to announce the ribbon cutting and Open House of the Veteran Healing Center in Big Spring which will house the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program. A ribbon will be cut and an unveiling of the signage will occur on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 in front of the newly constructed facility located on the northwest portion of the VA campus. Following a short program, tours will be provided of the beautiful facility. Parking will be available in the employee parking lot adjacent to Ryan Street.
The Word of God ministry is acknowledging five years of God's blessings upon the church. Five years ago the Lord inspired a vision for this ministry to be manifested. Even though the workings of it started years earlier in Pastor Dale Stowe's life, the reality of it started Jan. 29, 2006. Much of what the Lord has envisioned has come to pass, but there is more to come.
On the Faith Lutheran Church lawn, the white crosses continue to stand this week, as they continue to uphold their beliefs on the sanctity of human life. On the church lawn are 137 crosses representing the number of abortions that take place every hour in the United States. Since 1973, approximately 52 million children have had their lives taken from them. That number equals the population of 18 States, stretching from Mississippi north to Minnesota, west to Idaho and Oregon, and back down to Louisiana.
This is Jack Williams' first visit to Java Jax, to perform this coming Saturday evening show on the Jan. 29. After a conversation with Williams and discussing his talents in music from even when he was a small child, I can only imagine how great the show will be. When speaking to Williams it didn't take long to start up a conversation about subject material that we could both relate to.
Kinston---Wendy Butler Wade, 49, of Kinston, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011. Wendy was born Feb. 16, 1961, in Cisco, Texas to Clyde Butler of Sweetwater, TX and the late Patricia Ann Wallace Butler. In addition to her mother, Wendy was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Rufus F. Wade; daughter, Kassi Wade; and sister, Cindy Foster. Wendy graduated from the Lenoir Community College School Of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse with 3HC. Wendy was passionate about nursing and treated her patients as family.
Services for Evelyn Estelle Hillyard , 89, of Kaufman, TX, are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at Eubank Funeral Chapel in Canton with Bro. Dan Baum officiating. Burial will be in Haven of Memories in Canton under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home.
She passed away Jan. 26, 2011, in Kaufman, TX.
Family will receive friends Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home.

The first month of the new year is nearly over. That means the high school basket-ball playoffs are getting close, and over the next few weeks the postseason berths in each of the stateâ€™s districts will be decided.
While Sweetwaterâ€™s teams are off tonight, the other six Nolan County varsity squads will see action and three of them are still very much in the playoff hunt. In District 9-A, Division I, Roscoeâ€™s teams have a doubleheader at Haskell while in District 11-A, Division II, Highlandâ€™s teams host Loraine and in District 12-A, Division II, Blackwellâ€™s teams will host Paint Rock.
