Hospital to receive renovations

The Nolan County District Board of Directors met for the first time in 2011 for its regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, Jan. 24, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Various approvals regarding the month of December were made at the meeting. Among the approvals were the minutes from the previous meeting and several financial items. The bad debt write-off list, accounts payable and payroll, and the financial statements from December 2010 were all approved.

USG announces retirement

USG recently announced the retirement of Johnny Almanza, Hourly Supervisor in the #3 Board Department, after 31 years of dedicated service. Johnny selected a utility trailer as his retirement gift. "The employees of the Sweetwater plant would like to thank Johnny for his years of dedicated service, his personal commitment to safety and for his impact on the outstanding achievements of our plant over the years. We wish you the best in your future endeavors."

SISD announces new website

Sweetwater ISD has launched a new website that will provide important information to parents and community members. The site can be found at http://www.sweetwaterisd.net.

Vickie Castillo

Maria "Vickie" Castillo, 58, of Sweetwater, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, in Mt. Pleasant, TX.
Services were held at Curry-Wellborn Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, with Pastor Joshue Luna officiating. Interment was at Neville's Chapel Cemetery.
Ms. Castillo was born in Chihuahua, Mexico on Feb. 29, 1952, the daughter of Benito Castillo and Gregoria Najera Castillo.

Snyder sweeps S’water

SNYDER — SHS basketball teams enjoyed a big night on Tuesday. But it was the Snyder High School squads who came away with victories as the host Tigers and Lady Tigers teamed up to sweep a District 5-3A doubleheader against Sweetwater.
Snyder’s girls improved to 2-3 in district (16-9 overall) with a 56-40 win, while the boys romped to a 71-33 victory over Sweetwater for their first district win.
For the Lady Mustangs, Tuesday’s defeat was a setback to their playoff hopes.

Lady Hornets, Plowboys pick up key victories

The Highland girls and Roscoe boys collected key district basketball wins on Tuesday.
The Lady Hornets are now 7-2 in District 11-A, Division II after crushing Ira, 62-27. Callie Sandus-ky’s 24-point effort paced Highland, which was ahead 13-1, 31-5 and 47-15 at the breaks.
Kara Hughey added 11 points for Highland, who maintained its half-game lead over Loraine for second place. The teams meet at Highland Friday. Sierra Allen had eight points, Beth Richburg and Shyan Womack six, Jessica McCain four and Lora Stewart three.

Many presentations at SISD board meeting

Many awards and celebrations were on hand at the regular session meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees on Thursday night, Jan. 20, held at the Administration Building.
Two monetary donations were received from Charlie Peek with Brookshire's and Jackie Alvarez of Coca-Cola. The board approved the donations to be used for the general fund. Another gift given to the school board was a plaque from Steve Ellinger with CADCO. The company was in charge of the renovations done with the concession stands in Mustang Bowl as well as other improvements around the district.

TSTC awarded national seal of approval for wind program

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) announced the first-ever recipients of its new Seal of Approval for wind turbine service technician training programs.
The AWEA Seal of Approval program assesses whether educational and training institutions with technician programs are teaching the skills that an entry-level service technician needs, as identified by experts among AWEA's 2,500 company members.
The first three recipients of the Seal of Approval are:
• Texas State Technical College's (Sweetwater, Texas) Associates of Applied Science in Wind Energy & Turbine Technology program.

SW teams visit Snyder

While it’s true that neither Sweetwater or Snyder has had much success on the basketball court so far in District 5-3A., it’s nearly always interesting when the two schools face each other.
Fans will get a double dose of the rivalry today, as Sweetwater visits Snyder in a 5-3A varsity twinbill that starts with the girls game at 6 p.m. The boys contest is scheduled to tip off at about 7:30 p.m.

Powerlifters fare well at first meet

January 25, 2011

Both of Sweetwater’s powerlifting teams had good showings when competing at season-opening meets Thursday at Big Spring.
The Sweetwater girls scored 31 points in placing second to Abilene High out of 13 teams at their meet.
