George W. â€śBillâ€ť May, 89, passed away Sunday evening, June 26, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Military and Masonic graveside services will be held at the Garden of Memories Cemetery on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 11 a.m. with memorial services at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Phillip Thomas officiating.
Junior Alicia Finn and sophomore Kelsi Crosson of Sweetwater were named on Sunday to the 2011 All-Big Country Softball Team by the Abilene Reporter-News.Finn was chosen as a starting infielder after hitting .655 in district play with six doubles, three triples and one homer, while Crosson was selected as a starting outfielder after batting .545 with six doubles, two triples, six stolen bases and a .697 on-base percentage.
Kelsi Crosson earned All-Big Country recognition as a reserve outfielder follow-ing her freshman year.

ABILENE, Texas â€” Five defendants charged in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Lubbock, Texas, with running a cocaine and marijuana distribution conspiracy in north Texas, have been arrested.Â One defendant, Semei Cuevas Rodriguez, Sr., is a fugitive.Â The announcement was made Thursday by U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the Northern District of Texas.
In Texas the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline decreased a nickel since last week according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. The national average dropped seven cents.
The statewide average is $3.52 and the national average is $3.61.Â The Texas statewide average is nine cents below the national average.
A prayer vigil has been scheduled for to mark six months since 13-year-old Hailey Dunn vanished from her home in the small town of Colorado City.
The community will gather at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 25 at Colorado City's Ruddick Park to pray for the girl's safe return.
A large vigil was held to mark the three month anniversary of Hailey's disappearance. Her father, Clint Dunn, appeared at that vigil. It's unclear if he'll make it to this event. Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn, has since moved to Travis County.
The Nolan County Grand Jury handed down eight indictments this week in the 32nd Judicial District Court. Five of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
â€˘ Joe Michael Noriega was indicted for continuous violence against the family, a third degree felony. His bond was set at $15,000.
â€˘ Loraine Danielle Brown was indicted for prohibited substance in a correctional facility, a third degree felony. Court documents state that Brown possessed marijuana in the Nolan County Jail. Her bond was set at $7,500.
According to the Texas Forest Service, the White Hat fire in Nolan and Coke Counties is now 75 percent contained and has burned 71,200 acres of land. The Trent Mesa fire is also still burning and is about 50 percent contained with 600 acres of land now burned. Firefighters continue to battle the blazes. Texas Forest Service currently is responding to 15 large fires that have burned 163,829 acres. Critical fire weather conditions are expected today across portions of the West and Northwest branches and elevated fire conditions from the Big Country to the Edwards Plateau.
As of this past Sunday, Maryneal resident and Big Country Medical Reserve Corps member Carol Higdon says that she started to collect her important belongings, as well as help her sister on Monday pack her items in boxes in case they would have to evacuate.
Later Monday, Higdon proceeded to help arrange a location for all local Maryneal residents as well as firefighters and volunteers. The first location was at the Highland School.
Then Tuesday they were able to move over to the Community Center of Maryneal, since the smoke was not as strong as to compared to Monday.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued two citations and made four arrests on June 22, 2011.
The SPD received 33, 911 calls.
