Lily Closet to open Saturday

December 30, 2010

The Lily Closet, the clothes closet at First United Methodist Church, will be open this Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011.
The Lily Closet is open to anyone in the community or surrounding area. All clothes from the closet are free of charge.
The Lily Closet was established to provide clothing to families and individuals in need. The clothing is donated by church members and local individuals and organizations.

Travis Edward “Cody” Wright

Travis Edward “Cody” Wright, 40, of Sweetwater, left this world to be with our Father in Heaven Dec. 28, 2010.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at the Word of God Church with Pastor Dale Stowe officiating. A graveside service will be held at 5 p.m. later that day at Sweetwater Cemetery. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Area tourneys end

Overall, the Nolan County high school girls teams fared better than the boys teams in area basketball tournament action that ended Wednesday.
The Highland and Ros-coe girls finished second in their respective tournaments and the Sweetwater girls placed third. Roscoe had the best boys finish as the Plowboys won consol-ation honors, while High-land’s boys placed seventh.

Arrest made in sexual assault case

An arrest has been made in the male-on-male sexual assault case that took place on Aug. 15, 2010 around the southwest part of Sweetwater. Aubrey Phillip Childers, 23, of Sweetwater, was arrested on Monday, Dec. 27, as he was being processed out of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The Nolan County District Board of Directors met for its final regular session meeting in 2010 on Monday evening, Dec. 27, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).

Abilenians Against Tenaska, Multi-County Coalition donate to Gaylord’s Pantry

Abilene and Sweetwater residents united to gather several hundred dollars of non-perishable food items as part of their annual giving to the communities where they live.
Multi-County Coalition representative Whitney Root asked members to make donations over the course of about a week and a half resulting in 10 boxes crammed with food delivered to the Gaylord's Pantry of Sweetwater's First United Methodist Church on Monday, Dec. 20.

The Nolan County Commissioners' Court met for the final time in 2010 for a regular session on Monday morning, Dec. 27, at the Nolan County Courthouse.

NCF donates to Women’s Resource Center

Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board recently announced the awarding of $1,000 to Women's Resource Center. In making the announcement and presenting agency representative Adabelle Clark this assistance, Jerry Riggs, President of the NCF, stressed the importance of supporting worthwhile agencies as they serve vital needs for Nolan County residents. Riggs also stated that the NCF will be identifying other special needs and giving additional financial assistance in the near future.

The Magic Boat stops in Sweetwater

Just when you think the boat is a float, it's hittin' the road.
Gregory Troy of Grand Rapids, Mich. is on his 15th voyage in his "Magic Boat," with a 95 Jimmy cargo van engine that gets 18 miles to the gallon, with 243,327 miles on it. Not to mention his $400 used boat purchase from his neighbor that's on top of it.
Troy's making his voyage down the highway at 50 miles per hour and making many frequent pit stops to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation, selling T-shirts at $20 each which feature him, with his Magic Boat on the front.

NCF donates to SNAP

Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board recently announced the awarding of $1,000 to Meals on Wheels. In making the announcement and presenting agency representative Tonya Chellin this assistance, Jerry Riggs, President of the NCF, stressed the importance of supporting worthwhile agencies as they serve vital needs for Nolan County residents. Riggs also stated that the NCF will be identifying other special needs and giving additional financial assistance in the near future. Serving the NCF board with Riggs are Glenn Bennett, Ronnie Cox, Bill Johnson, Rod Wetsel, Ronald Williams, J.V.
