What’s up with the legislature?

The 82nd Texas Legislature convened in January and by now most of you have either seen, heard, or read about the multi-billion dollar state budget shortfall. The proposed baseline budget for the next biennium contains crippling cuts for almost all state entities, including public education. The latest estimates show an almost $10 billion reduction in education funding. Legislative committees are meeting daily to discuss the budget, but few solutions have been proposed.

As a youngster, I hung on his words, amazed at his courage, conviction and introspective dissection of the day’s news. Millions of others did, too.

Child Support Evader Kurt Lindner

Attorney General Greg Abbott needs your help locating Child Support Evader Kurt Lindner, one of the Most Wanted Child Support Evaders in Texas. Lindner, who was added to the Child Support Evader’s list in December 2005, owes $37,597 for the care of a daughter from Abilene.
In March 1993, Lindner was ordered to pay $250 a month in child support. Lindner, who had the ability to make his payments, did not follow the judge’s order to support his child financially.

Saying something important is more important than simply saying something

When it comes to writing my column, I don’t write about government issues or religion. I stay away from the political arena because it’s far too complicated and hostile for me. Instead, when I go to let my column flow, I put pen to paper and tell about what I know — life. 
Some may say it’s irrelevant, unorthodox or just the easy way out. For those that think that, who knows, maybe they are right, but maybe they aren’t.

We seem to be a nation that believes in taking holidays honoring various aspects of our national heritage, but while we enjoy the day off work (and the sales) we rarely stop to remember the reason for the celebration. Some holidays, such as the 4th of July and Veterans’ Day have not changed much since their inception. Presidents’ Day, formerly Washington’s Birthday, has had several changes.

Is using the dealer for vehicle warranty work a must?

Dear Editor,
It is a common misconception that only car dealers can perform the maintenance services on a newer vehicle that is under warranty. That is not so, according to the recent consumer alert issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The alert states that “It’s illegal for a dealer to deny your warranty coverage simply because you had routine maintenance or repairs performed by someone else. Routine maintenance often includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, fluid checks and flushes, new brake pads and inspections.”

As news stories, pictures, reports and videos pour in from coast to coast, the public is becoming fully aware of the corruption of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood – the nation’s largest abortion chain – is reeling as its institution-wide scandal continues coming to light, and efforts are ramping up in the U.S. Congress and many state legislatures to strip Planned Parenthood of its 360+Million in annual taxpayer funding.

Q: Chuck, I’m giving out chocolates this year to my valentines. In doing so, am I as concerned for their healthy hearts as I am for my romantic one? -- “Smitten for Sweets,” Bardstown, Ky.
A: With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, cupids across the country are contemplating what types of sweets to get their sweeties.
The verdict this year is definitely in: dark chocolate.

Horrific news from Iraq's Al Anbar province was still sinking in when the Manion family's phone rang in Doylestown, Pa. On the line was Brendan Looney, calling in the middle of grueling Navy SEAL training. The strong, aspiring warrior was bawling hysterically.
Earlier on that Sunday, April 29, 2007, Looney's Naval Academy roommate and dear friend, 1st Lt. Travis Manion, was killed by a sniper's bullet as he drew enemy fire away from wounded Marines. Manion, 26, was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor for heroism and gallantry displayed in combat.
