End of the road • Trojans speed past taller Highland for 53-45 victory

March 2, 2014

AUSTIN — The Highland girls basketball team knew what it was up against on Friday when it faced a Calvert squad whose considerable speed and ability to create turnovers with its wall-to-wall defensive pressure compensated for a big size disadvantage against the Lady Hornets.
What Highland could not have expected, however, was the kind of shooting performance delivered by Calvert’s Jaylonn Walker.

Clift no-hits Pampa in WBC opener

February 28, 2014

It doesn’t take many runs to give James Clift a comfortable lead when he pitches against Pampa.
He needed just one when he threw the opening game for Sweetwater’s baseball team Thursday at its newly named Wes Bishop Wood Bat Classic at Sportsman’s Park. But Clift got four runs while pitching a no-hitter against Pampa, the first of his varsity career.
Clift is now 3-0 over Pampa in the past year. This was his second straight shutout since last March when he pitched Sweetwater to a 6-2 win over Pampa at the 2013 Wood Bat Classic.

Here is the schedule for the Wes Bishop Wood Bat Classic baseball tournament being held at Sportsman Park through Saturday, March 1.
Due to a mixup, the wrong tournament schedule was printed in today's Reporter sports section and we regret the error.

Yearly baseball event honoring Wes Bishop

February 27, 2014

Play at the annual Wood Bat Classic in Sweetwater began today and continues through Saturday at Sports-man Park with a new name — the West Bishop Wood Bat Classic — as a way to honor the former director of physical therapy at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, who died this past October.
Bishop, a native of Sny-der and a member of Sny-der’s Athletic Hall of Hon-or, was very active in youth sports while at Sweetwater and instrumental in the renovation of Sweetwater High School’s baseball field. He was also coached youth baseball for 20 years.

Lady ‘Stangs rally but lose close one

February 27, 2014

SAN ANGELO — Sweet-water High School’s softball team rallied twice from four-run deficits and once from three runs down Tuesday to tie San Angelo Lake View, only to see the hosts score in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 12-11 victory.
Sweetwater (6-3) never led, but kept the pressure on with a three-run third inning to tie it 3-3, a four-run fifth to tie it at 7-7 and finally a four-run seventh to tie it once again, 11-11.
“I’m very proud of the way we fought back into the game,” Lady Mustang coach Tony Heredia said of his team’s effort.
