SW boys need win vs. Chiefs to enter 4-3A play unbeaten

Only one team — San Angelo Lake View’s Chiefs — stands between the Sweetwater boys basketball team and an undefeated non-district season.
The 10-0 Mustangs’ final non-district test will come when they host Lake View at about 8 p.m. today, three days before their 4-3A ope-ner Friday at Monahans.
Sweetwater’s girls play at Midland Greenwood at 6:15 p.m. today in district action. Sweetwater and Greenwood are tied with Wylie for first place with 1-0 records.

Sweetwater Little League signups start Wednesday; four dates set for this month

The first of four signups for Sweetwater Little League Baseball this month will be on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at the Sweetwater Intermediate School cafeteria.
Additional signups at the SIS cafeteria have been scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14; Monday, Jan. 20; and on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Persons must bring pay-ment, copies of three proofs of residency and a birth cer-tificate to the signups.

JV boys are now 9-1

Sweetwater’s JV boys im-proved their record to 9-1 on Friday with an easy 42-7 win at Coahoma.
The trio of Hardy Esco-bar, Michael Lawrence and Denzell Moore all had 10 points for Sweetwater. Also scoring were Deshaun Williams with eight, Mark Lawrence with three and Matthew Trevino with one.
Sweetwater ended 2013 by winning all three games in the JV boys division of a tournament at Post.

Roscoe, Highland girls claim Ws in district-opening basketball action

Highland and Roscoe got girls district play off to a successful start by winning 13-A, Division II basketball games on Friday.
Roscoe won 46-22 over Hermleigh in its contest, while Highland opened de-fense of its 13-A, Division II title by beating Westbrook 79-34.
Shelby Brown scored 19 points to pace Roscoe. Eva Aguayo had 13, Sunshine Saddler six, Cha Cha Chavez four and Ashton Payne and Whitney Williams two for the Plowgirls (9-9 overall).

Hornets now 3-0 in 14-A

Blackwell, led by Matthew Lowry’s 24 points, is 3-0 in District 14-A, Division II boys action after defeating Robert Lee 48-24 Friday. The Hornets are 9-2 for the season.
Mason Magness had 14 points while Ted Chambliss had six and Ethan Andrews and Jayden Jones two. The Hornets beat Robert Lee 53-41 in the JV boys game.
Blackwell’s girls lost their game 48-22, falling to 1-4 in District 14-A, Division II and 3-6 overall. Robert Lee (3-2, 7-4) led 17-6, 27-13 and 38-14 at the quarter breaks.

Mustangs race past Coahoma to go 10-0

COAHOMA — After leading by just one point at halftime, the still-undefeated Sweetwater boys basketball team caught fire over the final two periods en route to a 47-30 non-district win over Coahoma on Tuesday.
Sweetwater, now 10-0, led just 17-16 until out-scoring Coahoma 30-14 over the final two periods in the team’s first game of 2014.

Mustang footballers, spikers get academic all-state recognition by THSCA, TGCA

SW girls stun Big Spring

A supposedly-rebuilding Sweetwater girls basketball team got District 4-3A play off to a great start here on Tuesday, upsetting 16th-ranked Big Spring 44-40 at Mustang Gym.
Sweetwater (6-8) trailed 10-9 after the opening quar-ter against the Lady Steers, but led by three (23-20) at halftime and was in control most of the way from then on, trailing only once in the final two periods.
The Lady Mustangs, who were also playing their first game of 2014, enjoyed two seven-point leads and wea-thered three Big Spring ral-lies in the second half.

Lady Mustangs to begin Anson tournament today
