Playoff season begins for Highland’s teams Friday

February 14, 2013

The playoff season will get started for Highland’s basketball teams on Friday.
Technically, the Highland girls (27-4) — who ended the regular season Feb. 5 as District 13-A, Division II champions with a perfect 10-0 mark — will have the only playoff game. The Lady Hornets take on Zephyr in the area playoffs at Clyde with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Highland boys make a much shorter trip today — to Roscoe —to play a district tiebreaker game against Hermleigh that will start at 4 p.m.

Clyde broke open a close game against Sweetwater with a seven-run sixth in-ning on Tuesday en route to beating the Lady Mustangs, 16-7, in their opening game of the 2013 season at the Jerry Collins Complex.
Sweetwater led only once — 2-0 after one inning — but trailed only 8-7 after coming up with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

S’water moving on

February 13, 2013

SONORA — Now that the Sweetwater girls are in the Class 3A playoffs, they’ve decided to stay awhile.
The Lady Mustangs on Tuesday guaranteed that their best season since 2005 will continue by grabbing a 58-43 bi-district win over Fort Stockton.
Sweetwater, now 21-14 for the season, will take on Lubbock Cooper in the area playoffs later this week. At press time, the teams had tentatively agreed to play at Post on Friday.
Nothing has come easy for the Lady Mustangs over the past month during their run to the postseason, and Tuesday’s game wasn’t exactly a cakewalk either.

Mustangs drop finale

February 13, 2013

The Sweetwater boys basketball team finished 2-8 in district play and 13-15 overall after losing to Midland Greenwood, 72-57, here on Tuesday.
Sweetwater got a game-high 21 points from Kaleb Hoover, but no one else reached double figures. Dylan Bennett scored nine points, Rhett Torres eight, Deandre Gatson seven, Isaiah McGee five, J.P. Poe three and Cole Maxwell and Sean Morrow two.
Maxwell and Morrow are the team’s only seniors.

Lady Mustangs’ foe has SW ties

February 12, 2013

You might think that the only local connection the Sweetwater girls’ basketball team has to Fort Stockton — which will be facing the Lady Mustangs in a Class 3A bi-district playoff at 6:30 p.m. today at Sonora — is that the schools were 4A district rivals for many years back in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
But it turns out that the Sweetwater-Fort Stockton connection is much closer, because the Prowlers’ head coach has local ties.
Vic Ivy is now in his third year as head girls coach at Fort Stockton.

Plowgirls’ season ends with 32-29 loss to S-City

February 12, 2013

WINTERS — Defense has been a strength for this year’s Roscoe girls basketball team, and the Plowgirls were solid again in that area when the team faced Sterling City in a Class 1A, Division II bi-district matchup on Monday.
However, Sterling City was able to effectively shut down Roscoe’s offense — especially in the final two quarters — enough to pull out a 32-29 victory and end the Plowgirls’ year.

Boys end season today

Sweetwater hosts Green-wood and Roscoe will enter-tain Westbrook. Both the Mustangs and Plowboys are 2-7 in their districts (4-3A and 13-A, respectively).
Highland (7-2) will play host to first-place Ira (9-0) in its finale.

The 2013 softball season officially starts today for Sweetwater High School as its varsity and JV will host Colorado City at 4:30 and 6 p.m., respectively.
