Highland squads win d’header at Roscoe

Highland won both ends of a basketball doubleheader Tuesday when its teams made the short trip to face in-county rival Roscoe, as both of the visiting teams stayed unbeaten in District 13-A, Division II.
Highland’s girls (21-3, 4-0) solidified their hold on first place with a 41-20 win, while the boys (8-11, 2-0) kept their district record spotless by beating Roscoe 35-23.
Highland’s defense held Roscoe to four first-half points in the girls game as the Lady Hornets built a 19-4 advantage en route to ther ninth straight win overall.

The Sweetwater High School varsity girls basketball team, which is 16-10 overall and 2-1 in district play, will play at Snyder at 6:15 p.m. today with the boys game at 7:30.

SW hoopsters travel to Snyder

Sweetwater will be taking on a pair of desperate teams when the Lady Mustangs and Mustangs go to Snyder for a key District 4-3A bas-ketball doubleheader today.
While the Sweetwater and Snyder boys are both 0-1 in district play, Sweetwater’s girls — who will tip off the doubleheader at 6:15 p.m. — are 2-1 while Snyder is off to an 0-3 start. The Lady Mustangs need a win to stay on the heels of 4-3A co-leaders Wylie and Green-wod, both 3-0, who have an early showdown in Green-wood today.

Tadeo Canon-Masjoan has received another postseason football honor.
Sweetwater’s senior def-ensive lineman on Sunday was a second-team selection by the Abilene Reporter-News to its all-Big Country Super Team. He previously was a second team pick by the Reporter-News to its Class 3A-5A all-Big Country football team.

Banyard speaks at sports banquet

January 14, 2013

Joseph Banyard, a former Sweetwater High School star who is now a running back for the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings, made remarks to the current SHS players when he spoke at Thursday’s Fall Sports Banquet held at the Nolan County Coliseum.
Banyard signed with the Vikings in November after also spending time this season with the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints.

Loboes cool off Mustangs

Sweetwater came into its District 4-3A opener with a seven-game winning streak yet likely facing its toughest challenge of the season.
And from the start, it was an uphill battle as Monahans led 8-1 before Sweetwater hit his first field goal at the 2:25 mark of the opening quarter, en route to a 63-43 win. Monahans (17-3 overall) never let the Mustangs get closer than four points after its quick start at Sweetwater’s gym.

Lady ‘Stangs stomp Lady Loboes, 53-24

After barely surviving Big Spring in their 4-3A opener and giving up a fourth-quarter lead against Midland Greenwood, the Sweetwater girls basketball team needed a statement win here Friday to regain their footing in the district race.
And that’s what they got in a dominating 53-24 win over Monahans that kept the Lady Mustangs (2-1 district, 16-10) within striking distance of the 4-3A lead held by both Wylie and Greenwood, who are 3-0.
“The girls were very determined tonight,” said Sweetwater coach Al Miller. “They were determined to take care of business.”

Highland girls alone in 1st in 13-A after big win

After another easy win on Friday, Highland’s girls now find themselves looking down on all five of their basketball rivals in District 13-A, Division II.
Twelve different players scored for Highland in a 70-26 rout of Loraine as the Lady Hornets im-proved to 20-3 overall and 3-0 in district play.

Sub-varsity hoops

In sub-varsity basketball action here Friday, Sweet-water’s girls won both of their games against Mona-hans while the Sweetwater boys both fell short.
The junior varsity girls are now a perfect 17-0 for the season, and 3-0 in district, as they won 54-34.
Bianca Castillo and Cierra Knox each scored 10 points while Abby McPherson had nine, Shaneese Brown eight, Maddie Jones seven, Jaya Atkins and Jasmine Reddic three and Lexi Castillo and Nisha Williams two.
The freshman girls are now 9-5 overall and 2-1 in district after winning 33-15.
