JV girls are perfect 20

The Sweetwater JV girls are still unbeaten after top-ping Big Spring, 32-22, here Tuesday to improve to 20-0 this season.
Shaneese Brown had 10 points, Cierra Knox nine and Morgan Whitley eight in Tuesday’s win for Sweet-water, also 6-0 in district. The Lady Mustangs led 6-1, 15-5 and 20-12 at the breaks. Jaya Atkins and Nisha Williams had two and Abby McPherson one.
The freshman girls also won, 25-21, to go 4-2 in district play while improving their season mark to 11-6.

SMS boys go 3-for-4

The Sweetwater Middle School seventh and eighth grade Red boys basketball teams won three of four games when they served as host teams for a one-day tournament Saturday.
Merkel and Wall provided the opposition for the event held at the Sweetwater Middle School gym.
The seventh grade Red team won both of its games, defeating Merkel 43-24 and Wall 49-27, and the eighth grade Red boys also beat Wall 30-13 following a 23-21 loss to Merkel.

Lady Steers nip S’water in overtime

To say Sweetwater and Big Spring have been even-ly matched district rivals this season might qualify as an understatement.
The Lady Mustangs had to survive two last-second Big Spring shot attempts to pull out a 35-33 victory at Big Spring in the teams’ district 0pener Jan. 4.
But on Tuesday, it was the Lady Steers turn to deal some heartache as they held on for a 41-40 overtime win at Mustang Gym, leaving both teams 3-3 and tied for third in District 4-3A with four games left.

Prior to last Friday’s game at Wylie, the Sweetwater boys had won eight of nine games while scoring 6o or more points in three of their first four games of 2013.
But the Mustangs (12-10, 1-3) have faltered offensive-ly of late, managing just 64 total points in their last two contests. And after a 49-39 loss to Big Spring here on Tuesday, Sweetwater badly needs to regain its shooting touch in a hurry if it hopes to be a factor in District 4-3A play.

Highland teams, Roscoe girls win

Nolan County teams went 3-for-4 in District 13-A, Division II basketball play on Tuesday.
Highland’s teams swept their doubleheader at home vs. Westbrook. However, Roscoe’s teams had to set-tle for a split against Herm-leigh in their twinbill, with the girls getting the win.
Led by a sensational 34-point effort from Sierra Allen, the Highland girls pulled away in the second half to beat Westbrook 56-33 and move to 6-0 in district. Highland led just 28-24 at halftime.

SHS squads host B-Spring in key contests

When Sweetwater’s teams play host to Big Spring today at Mustang Gym, both ends of the District 4-3A double-header will be critical for the home team.
The 3-2 girls need a win over 2-3 Big Spring to avoid falling into a third-place tie, while the 1-2 boys will try to keep Big Spring (0-3) win-less in district and possibly gain a third-place tie with Greenwood (2-1), which will travel to 3-0 Monahans.

This year’s team has a 10-6 overall record and ended the first half of District 4-3A play with a 3-2 mark. The Lady Mustangs begin the second half of district by hosting Big Spring at 7:30 p.m. today.

JV girls 19-0 after beating Wylie

Sweetwater’s junior var-sity girls basketball team has a perfect 19-0 record entering today’s 5 p.m. game with Big Spring after winning 38-24 at Wylie this past Friday.
Cierra Knox had 14 points to lead Sweetwater (5-0 in district play), which led 16-12 at halftime and outscored Wylie 14-5 in the third quarter to open a 30-17 lead. Abby McPherson scored seven, Shaneese Brown six, Maddie Jones five, Bianca Castillo four and Nisha Williams two.

SHS powerlifting

Sweetwater’s girls scored 24 points to win the team title at the season-opening powerlifting meet Thursday in Big Spring, beating out Colorado City (23 points) and Big Spring (22).
The Sweetwater boys also went to Big Spring and fin-ished with 22 points for fourth place. Lake View won the division with 45 points.
The only weight class winner for the Sweetwater girls was Nay Gonzales, who lifted a total of 560 pounds in the 220-pound class.

Bulldogs humble ‘Stangs

ABILENE — A convincing Sweetwater victory at Snyder on Tuesday, coupled with Wylie’s surprisingly-narrow win at Greenwood, gave the Mustangs hope they could put up a tough fight here Friday.
But the No. 5 Bulldogs had other ideas.
While Sweetwater jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Wylie was relentless after gaining the upper hand as it rolled to a 76-25 win.
