Mustangs go to WF Hirschi for first scrimmage

August 16, 2013

Shane Mobley, who is beginning his second year as Sweetwater’s head football coach, says he will be looking for good execution when his Mustangs go to Wichita Falls today for their first of two scrimmages.
About 85 players will play in today’s scrimmage vs. Wichita Falls Hirschi at Memorial Stadium. The JV and freshmen will start it off about 6 p.m., with varsity players taking the field about one hour later.
“Last year, we were just teaching them how to run pass routes (on offense) and it was a real big change,” said Mobley.

Highland has high hopes

August 14, 2013

Most people have heard the familiar expression: close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
It’s something Highland’s football team can certainly relate to the past two years under coach Jeff Shelton.
In 2011, the Hornets were a missed extra-point conversion away from the play-offs. Last year, Highland — though winless in district play — lost nailbiters (at least for six-man football) in two of its three games.

The season starts Aug. 30 at Eastland.

Mustangs may be ready to end playoff drought

August 12, 2013

It’s been five long years since Sweetwater fielded a playoff team.
Put another way, none of the current Mustangs were in high school the last time it happened in 2008.
