Roscoe defeated at De Leon, 34-21

DE LEON — Roscoe produced a few eye-popping offensive stats against the De Leon Bearcats on Friday in its first game under new head coach Jake Freeman.
Quarterback Cutter Davila completed a whopping 35 of 46 passes for 389 yards and two touchdowns. And his favorite passing target against the Bearcats, Shelton Toliver, caught 16 balls for 130 yards.
But despite their heroics, plus another 100-yard receiving effort by Kevin Lavalais (5 catches for 115 yards and one TD), the Plowboys weren’t able to pull off the victory.

Blackwell closes out Westbrook in opener

WESTBROOK — It took only one half for Blackwell to defeat Westbrook on Fri-day in its season opener.
Thanks to the 45-point rule, it was over at halftime as Blackwell finished with a convincing 52-0 road win.
The Hornets had 294 total yards on 23 snaps in two quarters of work, as they finished the night with 222 yards rushing and another 72 yards through the air.

Area teams to begin on road

For Nolan County’s three area football teams, success in their season openers will mean winning on the road.
For two of them — Roscoe and Highland — it will also be a chance to avenge a loss in their season opener against the same opponent this past year.
Today’s game at De Leon will also mark the head coaching debut for Roscoe’s Jake Freeman, who returned to his home town after being an assistant at Sweetwater the past four years.

DV, Everman to play on Saturday

Two perennial Class 4A high school playoff teams make a return appearance at Mustang Bowl Saturday.
El Paso Del Valle and Everman play at 6:30 p.m. in the Bowl’s first game of the year. They were part of the Sammy Baugh Classic last year, playing the finale with Everman winning by a score of 48-10, but will not be in the Classic this year.

Banyard finishes preseason with impressive effort

Former Sweetwater High School athlete Joe Banyard had a strong performance in his preseason finale for the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans as the Vikings won 24-23.
Banyard ended the night with a team-high seven re-ceptions for 54 yards, inclu-ding an 11-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter which was his second score of the preseason. In addi-tion, the Vikings’ running back led the team in rushing as he carried the ball 13 times for 62 yards.
Banyard is trying to make the team’s 53-player roster to be announced Saturday.

SW, Eastland to spread it out

The final score was just 23-13 when Sweetwater opened its 2012 season by defeating Eastland at home in Shane Mobley’s debut as head coach.
But the teams combined for 710 yards, and with Sweetwater having a year to adjust to Mobley’s spread offense, that number could go higher in Friday’s season-opening rematch at 7:30 p.m. in Eastland.

Lady Mustangs get split

After defeating Graham in five games, Sweetwater lost a 3-0 decision Tuesday against Breckenridge in a dual volleyball match that was played at Graham.
Kayla Chowning had sev-en kills, Maddie Berry five and Shaneese Brown, Kensi Chowning and Ziggy Collins four apiece against Graham as Sweetwater won 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-9.
But the Lady Mustangs couldn’t stop Breckenridge, which won 25-22, 25-18, 25-17, forcing Sweetwater (7-11) to settle for a split.

Spikers split six games at S-Angelo

Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team plays a dual match at Graham today after splitting its six games at a tournament in San Angelo over the weekend.
Sweetwater (6-10) had just one win in Friday’s pool play, but got bracket wins Saturday over Odessa High (25-22, 25-11) and Bronte (25-20, 25-15).

SW’s Amos named to preseason Super Team

Sweetwater’s Bray Amos has been named as a wide receiver to the All-Big Coun-try preseason Super Team announced Sunday by the Abilene Reporter-News.
The 5-7, 160-pound jun-ior had 50 catches this past season for 652 yards. Sweetwater’s Isaiah McGee (defensive back), Kaegan Jeffrey (quarterback) and Kaleb Hoover (wide recei-ver) were listed as “others to watch” by the newspaper, as were two other Nolan County athletes — Roscoe linebacker Vincent Pantoja and Blackwell defensive back Mason Magness.
