Blackwell teams lose pair at P-Rock

Blackwell lost both ends of a District 14-A, Division II basketball doubleheader at Paint Rock on Tuesday.
The Blackwell boys lost to Paint Rock 47-33 in their district opener. Mason Mag-ness paced the Hornets (2-10 overall) with 10 points while Ethan Andrews had nine points, Wade Allen and Jayden Jones six and Ted Chambliss two. Paint Rock led 12-6, 21-15 and 33-20 at the breaks.

SHS wins pair against C-City

After missing the first 11 games of the 2012-13 basketball season due to an injury he suffered at the end of football season, Sweetwater’s Kaleb Hoover showed little rust in his return Tuesday night against Colorado City.
In fact, last season’s district Newcomer of the Year appears ready for the start of 4-3A action which is less than a month away. The 6-1 junior scored a team-high 19 points in leading the Mustangs to a 45-42 victory, completing a doubleheader sweep at Sweetwater’s gym.

Two ‘Stangs receive APSE hon. mention

Two Sweetwater High School football players — senior defensive lineman Tadeo Canon-Masjoan and senior linebacker Ryan Linebaugh — have received honorable mention to the Associated Press Sports Editors Class 3A all-state team released on Tuesday.
Both Canon-Masjoan and Linebaugh were named to the All-District 4-3A first team that was announced in early December.

SHS hoop teams keep winning streaks alive

Two Sweetwater High School sub-varsity basketball teams kept their unbeaten records intact this past weekend with road wins. Sweetwater’s JV girls are now 13-0 after winning 39-24 at Graham on Satur-day and the freshman boys are 5-0 after winning 37-28 at Bangs on Friday.

Lady Mustangs hold off Graham to get 11th victory

Going on the road for the final time before the holi-day break, the Sweetwater girls basketball team got 18 points from Kendra Crosson and led at the end of each quarter as it held off Gra-ham, 37-32, on Saturday.
Crosson got double-figure support from Suede Shirley, who had 11 points to help the Lady Mustangs improve their record to 11-7. The game, originally set for Friday, was moved because Graham’s football team played in the state semifinals, losing to Gilmer 50-7.
Kelsi Crosson had three points, Kathleen Campbell and Janell Walker two and Taylor McPherson one.

All-district Plowboys

Roscoe landed four of its players on the all-District 7-A, Division II first team that was released this past week, while several other players also earned district recognition.
One of the district’s top honors went to Roscoe freshman Vincent Pantoja, who shared the district’s defensive newcomer of the year honor with Hamlin’s Marcos Rojas.
Roscoe’s four District 7-A, Division II first team selections were defensive lineman Landon Jones, cornerback Brant Burnett, utility player Chris Deleon and receiver Shelton Toliver. Deleon, Burnett and Jones are seniors while Toliver is a junior.

SHS rally comes up short at Bangs

BANGS — The Sweetwa-ter High School boys bas-ketball team saw a furious fourth-quarter rally come up just short Friday as the Mustangs lost at Bangs, 47-44, despite outscoring their hosts 16-6 in the final eight minutes of play.

Highland girls are the lone area winner

Only one Nolan County area varsity basketball team — the 14-3 Highland girls — won Friday. Sierra Allen had 25 points as Highland beat Hamlin 42-38. Hannah Allen had seven, Schyler Kimbrell six, Sydny Helbert four and Madison Moseley two for the Lady Hornets, who were up 34-23 after three periods and held off a big Hamlin rally in the final quarter at Highland.
In the other girls games on Friday, Roscoe lost to Forsan 36-23 in non-dis-trict while Blackwell was defeated 70-9 by Garden City in a District 14-A, Div-ision II contest.
