Lady ‘Stangs win two on road

GRAHAM — Sweetwater’s Lady Mustangs won both ends of a dual match here Tuesday as it swept past Graham and Breckenridge in three games.
Sweetwater (12-7) defeated Graham 25-15, 25-16, 25-8 and beat Breckenridge 25-20, 25-15, 25-12 in two of its most dominating per-formances of the season. The Lady Mustangs will be at Frenship’s two-day tournament starting Friday.

Everman vs. Del Valle marks Classic milestone

Regardless of who wins the game, Saturday’s finale of this year’s eighth annual Sammy Baugh Classic at Mustang Bowl will mark a fairly significant milestone.
When Class 4A Everman and El Paso Del Valle meet that day at 6 p.m., it will mark the first time that two teams above the 3A level have played in the Classic, and of course, the first time they’ve played each other.
In fact, there’s been only one other team in Classic history above Class 3A that has participated.

V’ballers back on road today at Graham

Sweetwater’s volleyball team will stay on the road for a dual match today in Graham after placing third in the Silver Division at San Angelo’s Nita Vannoy tournament this weekend.

Mustangs play final scrimmage at L-View

Despite persistent weather delays, Sweetwater got in 26 plays — 16 on offense and 10 on defense — in its final scrimmage Friday at San Angelo Lake View before play was halted.
The Mustangs produced an impressive 135 yards, 86 of it coming on 6-of-10 passing, with their new spread offense and scored against the Chiefs on a 7-yard run. Another Sweetwater drive reached Lake View’s 4-yard line before coming up short.
Sweetwater will host Eastland this Friday to begin the regular season.

Ex-SW star helps Saints beat Texans

NEW ORLEANS — For-mer Sweetwater High School and University of Texas-El Paso standout Joseph Banyard rushed for 25 yards on seven carries in the New Orleans Saints’ 34-27 exhibition win over the Houston Texans on Saturday night.

Mustangs at L-View for their final tuneup

With just a week left until the season opener against Eastland on Aug. 31 at the Sammy Baugh Classic, Sweetwater head football coach Shane Mobley is hop-ing to get a good evaluation of his team in today’s final scrimmage against San Angelo Lake View at the Chiefs’ stadium.
Though it will be played primarily under a controlled format, the scrimmage — which begins at approximately 6:30 p.m. after the freshman and JV teams scrimmage at 5 — will more closely resemble what fans can expect to see once the season begins.

Spikers are at S-Angelo tourney after dropping match at Seminole

The Sweetwater High School volleyball team began action at the Nita Vannoy Memorial Tourna-ment in San Angelo today after losing at Seminole in its most recent match this past Tuesday.
Sweetwater comes into the two-day tournament with a 6-5 overall record after falling to Seminole in four highly-competitive games Tuesday. The Lady Mustangs — who had also lost to Seminole in four games when the teams met in Sweetwater a week earlier — won the first game 25-19, but Seminole came back to win the last three games by nail-biting scores 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22 in claiming the match.
