SW teams play at G’wood

January 25, 2013

With lopsided losses at Wylie last Friday followed by disappointing home defeats on Tuesday against Big Spring, the past week hasn’t been a lot of fun for Sweetwater’s varsity basketball teams.
They likely will have to avoid a similar fate over the next two games in order to keep their playoff chances alive, but both games — starting today with contests at Midland Greenwood at 6:15 (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys) — will be on the road. Sweetwater also goes to Monahans on Tuesday before returning home next Friday to face Snyder.

Lady Steers nip S’water in overtime

January 23, 2013

To say Sweetwater and Big Spring have been even-ly matched district rivals this season might qualify as an understatement.
The Lady Mustangs had to survive two last-second Big Spring shot attempts to pull out a 35-33 victory at Big Spring in the teams’ district 0pener Jan. 4.
But on Tuesday, it was the Lady Steers turn to deal some heartache as they held on for a 41-40 overtime win at Mustang Gym, leaving both teams 3-3 and tied for third in District 4-3A with four games left.

Mustangs struggle again as Steers get 1st 4-3A win, 49-39

January 23, 2013

Prior to last Friday’s game at Wylie, the Sweetwater boys had won eight of nine games while scoring 6o or more points in three of their first four games of 2013.
But the Mustangs (12-10, 1-3) have faltered offensive-ly of late, managing just 64 total points in their last two contests. And after a 49-39 loss to Big Spring here on Tuesday, Sweetwater badly needs to regain its shooting touch in a hurry if it hopes to be a factor in District 4-3A play.

Highland teams, Roscoe girls win

January 23, 2013

Nolan County teams went 3-for-4 in District 13-A, Division II basketball play on Tuesday.
Highland’s teams swept their doubleheader at home vs. Westbrook. However, Roscoe’s teams had to set-tle for a split against Herm-leigh in their twinbill, with the girls getting the win.
Led by a sensational 34-point effort from Sierra Allen, the Highland girls pulled away in the second half to beat Westbrook 56-33 and move to 6-0 in district. Highland led just 28-24 at halftime.

SHS squads host B-Spring in key contests

January 22, 2013

When Sweetwater’s teams play host to Big Spring today at Mustang Gym, both ends of the District 4-3A double-header will be critical for the home team.
The 3-2 girls need a win over 2-3 Big Spring to avoid falling into a third-place tie, while the 1-2 boys will try to keep Big Spring (0-3) win-less in district and possibly gain a third-place tie with Greenwood (2-1), which will travel to 3-0 Monahans.
