S’water scores 15 to rip Monahans, gain 3rd-place tie

April 16, 2014

The number 15 has signi-fied a lot of things for the Sweetwater baseball team this season when it comes to Monahans.
It represents the number of wins the Mustangs had during their 15-3 start this season before a 7-3 loss at Monahans on March 25.
It also represents the total number of runs the team had scored in its last four games since that loss as the team endured a 1-4 tailspin. But on Tuesday, in their final home game, it represented the Mustangs’ final score in a 15-1 win over the Loboes in five innings at Sportsman’s Park.

Mustangs seek revenge vs. the Loboes

April 15, 2014

The District 4-3A playoff picture is unsettled, but a win today at home would help the Sweetwater baseball team’s chances of making the postseason.
And avenging a 7-3 loss on March 25 when Sweet-water played at Monahans would be nice, too.
Wylie (6-1) has a one-game lead over Big Spring with Sweetwater and Mona-hans (3-4) tied for fourth with three games left, one game behind Snyder (4-3). The top four teams will ad-vance to the playoffs.

SW’s Hunt is 4 out of lead at 1-3A event

April 15, 2014

Sweetwater’s Michael Hunt has a shot at a state tournament medalist berth after an opening 75 Mon-day at the Region I-3A tour-nament in Lubbock.
He trails Andrews’ G.K. Morrison (71) by four shots at the Shadow Hills Golf Course and is tied for sev-enth place entering today’s final round. The top three individuals not on one of the top three teams will go to the state meet in Austin as medalists April 28-29, and Hunt would advance to the state meet in his current position.

The SHS boys qualified six athletes in a total of seven events, including two relays, and scored 81 points as a team to place third.
Both Isaiah McGee and Johnathan Browning are going to the area meet in four boys events. McGee, who scored an individual meet-high 26 points, qualified in the long jump, 200 dash and as a member of the 400 and 800 relays, which both had second-place finishes.

Mustangs fall back to 4th-place tie

April 14, 2014

BIG SPRING — Falling behind early has been common for Sweetwater’s baseball team since district play began. It happened again Friday as Big Spring led 3-0 after two innings and 4-0 after three. The Mustangs got one run back in the fifth and scored two more runs to make it 4-3 in the sixth, but couldn’t get any closer as Big Spring held on for a 5-3 victory over Sweetwater.
The Mustangs fell to 3-4 in district, with a more im-pressive 16-7 overall record, and are now tied for fourth place with Monahans with only three games left in the regular season.
