SW, Blackwell are given playoff nods

A six-year playoff drought will end this season for the Sweetwater football team.
So says Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, which is now available on newsstands and is predic-ting that the Mustangs will finish second in their new district (2-4A, Division II) to Monahans in 2014. The last time Sweetwater made the playoffs was 2008.
Blackwell — the only Nolan County school to reach the postseason each of the last two years — will make it again in 2014, ac-cording to the magazine. The Hornets are picked to finish second in their new district (7-1A, Division II) to Loraine.

LL all-stars start district tournaments on Saturday

District 5 all-star tourna-ments begin on Saturday, and Sweetwater will have Little League teams participating in four age divisions — 9-10, 10-11, 11-12 and Junior League (13-14) at Abilene-area parks.
Sweetwater’s 9-10 year-old all-stars will start out by playing Snyder in two pool games on Saturday and Monday in Snyder. After that, the team will be seeded according to pool results and will advance to bracket play, which begins June 26 and is double-elimination, and runs through July 4.

Mustangs are headed to state 7-on-7 tourney in Col. Station

Sweetwater will exper-ience a “first” next month when the Mustangs play at the state 7-on-7 tournament, which is scheduled for July 10-11 at Texas A&M University in College Station.
The Mustangs went to Stephenville this past weekend to participate in a state 7-on-7 qualifying tournament on the Tarle-ton State University cam-pus, and won their brac-et and semifinals game to advance for the first time to the state tourney.
In bracket play, Sweet-water beat Godley 42-22, Grandview 35-26 and Eastland 37-29 to make the semifinals, where it defeated Tolar 40-26.

North stars

James Clift (left) and Stephen May, both 2014 Sweetwater High School graduates, played starring roles for the North all-stars in their 3-0 win over the South on Friday at the inaugural Fellowship of Christian Athletes base-ball game in San Angelo. Clift was named the MVP of the game and May was the winning pitcher.

Local athletes help North teams pick up all-star wins

ABILENE — Three more recently-graduated Nolan County high school athletes were on the winning North teams Saturday for the conclusion of the three-day Big Country Chevy Dealers-Fellowship of Christian Ath-letes All-Star Festival.
Micaela Reschman, a 2014 Sweetwater High School graduate, was a member of the North volleyball team that won 25-16, 25-23 over the South in a game held at Wylie High School’s gym.

Lady Mustang softball campers

Twenty-two girls participated this past week in a Lady Mustang Softball Camp held at the Jerry Collins Complex.

Sports camps

Two All-American Vol-leyball Camps will be held in Sweetwater.
A camp for students entering grades 6-8 will be held June 16-17 from 3:45-5:45 p.m. both days at the Sweetwater Middle School gym. Also, a camp for students entering grades 9-12 will be held June 16-18 at the SMS gym with two sessions: from 9-11:30 a.m. and also 12:30-3 p.m. The cost is $153 per player.
