LAMESA — Despite being a distant 111 shots behind Snyder after Tuesday’s final round, Sweetwater’s girls golf team easily earned the right to advance to the regional tournament in Lubbock with its second-place District 2-4A finish.

BIG SPRING — Michael Hunt lost a total of three shots from his first-round lead, but he still captured District 2-4A golf medalist honors Monday with a six-shot win as the Sweetwater junior earned a second con-secutive trip to the regional tournament.

S’water falls to B-Spring in 10

On Monday, Sweetwater jumped out to a 9-5 lead over Big Spring in the top of the ninth inning after a four-run explosion featuing RBI hits by Morgan Gomez, Megan Holsey, Jaya Atkins and Lauren Jones. Howev-er, Big Spring immediately answered in the bottom of the ninth with four runs of its own, then scored again in the 10th for a 10-9 softball win to move into second place in District 2-4A.

Big district week starts Monday

District golf will wrap up for both Sweetwater and Blackwell starting Monday, and many other area sports teams will see district action this week as well as they try to advance to the next level.
On Monday and Tuesday, Sweetwater’s tennis teams go to Big Spring for their district event, and Sweetwater, Roscoe and Highland track athletes at the middle school level will also have their district meets this week.
Also, Sweetwater’s baseball and softball teams will both be involved in key district games this week.

Lady Mustangs stampede to win

Since a loss in its opener to first-place Snyder, the Sweetwater softball team has thrust itself into the thick of the District 2-4A playoff chase with three consecutive victories to tie Big Spring for second place.
And the Lady Mustangs have made a lot of noise on the scoreboard during their current streak, scoring 20 of more runs in a game twice.

Mustangs win in bottom of 7th

For the first time in dis-trict play, Sweetwater’s of-fense sputtered Thursday.
But the Mustangs still found a way to win, beating Lubbock Estacado 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning as the bottom three hitters — actually four — in the order came through to push Sweetwater (3-0 in District 2-4A) past the last-place Matadors.
