GC rallies past Highland

March 2, 2015

ABILENE — After basi-cally dominating the first two quarters of Saturday’s Region II-1A semifinal over a team they had eliminated in the regional finals each of the past two years, foul trouble and a fierce Garden City press caught up to the Highland girls basketball team at Abilene Christian University. It resulted in a 37-33 loss as the Lady Kats advanced to Sunday’s re-gional final.

SW girls have 1-2 Classic finish

The Sweetwater High School varsity and JV girls golf teams not only hosted a tournament Wednesday at Sweetwater Country Club, but also made off with most of the hardware.

Baseball, softball teams are hoping to see action Saturday

If the bad weather that has made a mess of this week’s local high school sports schedule improves enough, Sweetwater hopes Saturday to play a baseball double-header at Sportsman’s Park and one softball game at the Jerry Collins Complex.

Highland girls begin play Friday at regional tournament in Abilene

The Highland girls basketball team begins defending its Region II-1A title when it plays Garden City at 1 p.m. Friday. The Lady Hornets and Lady Bearcats will hold their semifinal contest at Abilene Christian University's Moody Coliseum. Should Highland win, it will advance to play either O'Donnell or Cross Plains for the regional title at noon Saturday, also at Abilene Christian. The Lady Hornets' ultimate goal is to go to San Antonio next week and play in the Class 1A girls state tournament for the third straight year.

As fate would have it, the Highland and Garden City girls basketball teams are meeting in the Region II-1A tournament for the third consecutive year.
But Friday’s matchup has a little different twist.

Highland girls’ win returns them to ACU

BIG SPRING — After a start that saw six lead chan-ges, the Highland girls bas-ketball team took charge of Tuesday’s Class 1A regional quarterfinal playoff with a 56-39 win over Grady — sending them to the Region II-1A tournament for the third straight year at Abilene Christian University, where the Lady Hornets are two-time defending champions.
