Mustangs are co-champs

April 29, 2013

The final night of the 2013 regular season Friday was an eventful one for Sweet-water’s baseball team.
It began with hopes for an outright district championship — hopes that were dashed when the Mustangs were defeated 11-5 by Snyder at Sportsman’s Park.
However, Sweetwater still claimed a piece of the Dis-trict 4-3A crown thanks to some help from Big Spring, which won 5-3 over Wylie. But the Bulldogs get the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye after beating Sweetwater in both head-to-head games.

‘Stangs host Tigers; Lady ‘Stangs start playoffs

April 26, 2013

Spring fever is a common thing for many people in late April when the weather begins to stay warmer.
Fans of the Sweetwater High School baseball and softball teams, though, have another name for it: playoff fever.
Since softball was adopted as a UIL sport, this is the first time for the Lady Mustangs (20-13) and the Mustangs (15-12) to both advance to the playoffs. In fact, in that 17-year span prior to 2013, each of the programs had gone to the playoffs just three times. But that’s all changed.

SW, Pecos to play at Frenship

April 25, 2013

The Class 3A bi-district softball playoff between Sweetwater and Pecos has been moved to another Lubbock-area location.
The teams have agreed to hold their playoff at Frenship High School in Wolfforth at 7 p.m. Saturday, according to Sweetwater head coach Tony Heredia.
The location was changed due to a conflict with the field at Lubbock Coronado High School, the original choice. Sweetwater, the District 4-3A runnerup, is in the playoffs for the sec-ond straight year. Pecos was the third-place team from District 3-3A. The winner will advance to the area playoffs to face Pampa.

Regional track to begin Friday

April 25, 2013

A large number of Nolan County high school athletes are traveling either west or south where they will com-pete in regional track meets that get started on Friday.
Sweetwater’s athletes will be at the Region I-3A meet at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, while athletes in Roscoe, Blackwell and Highland will all travel to San Angelo where they will be competing in the Region II-1A, Division II meet at Angelo State University.
Roscoe will be sending the largest contingent among the four county high schools, with 20 athletes — 11 boys and nine girls — ex-pected to be in San Angelo.

Highland regional boys qualifiers

April 25, 2013

Highland boys competing at the Region II-1A, Division II track meet on Friday and Saturday at Angelo State University are, from left, Sheldon Hall, Michael Hyde and Jacob Richburg.
Hall will be competing in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run; Hyde will be competing in the pole vault; and Richburg will compete in the high jump.
In addition to qualifying in track, Hyde was a regional medalist qualifier in golf.
