Local teams end season at district L-League tourneys

Six Sweetwater teams end their season at area District 5 Little League tournaments starting Monday.
The Dodgers, who won the Minor League for ages 9-10, play Wylie No. 3 at 8 p.m. Monday at Abilene Dixie while the RiverDogs, the Minor League runner-ups, play the Snyder Cubs at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wylie.
Sweetwater’s two repres-entatives for Major League (11-12) were to be decided on Friday. The No. 1 team plays Abilene Southern’s Yankees at 8 p.m. Monday at Snyder. The No. 2 team plays Snyder’s Braves with their first game slated to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Snyder.

Lady Mustang Bas-ketball Camp: June 4-7 at Sweetwater Middle School gym for students completing grades 2-8. Sessions are from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost: $35 which includes T-shirt.

Six locals to be in FCA all-star games Saturday

Six just-graduated senior students from Nolan County high schools have been chosen to participate in Fellowship of Christian Athletes games that will be played Saturday, June 2 in Abilene.
Taylor Jones and Sam Nemir of Sweetwater and Corey Hatcher of Roscoe will play for the North team at the FCA Myrle Greathouse All-Star Classic football game that kicks off at 7 p.m. at Shotwell Stadium.
Roscoe’s Jacinda Morales, meanwhile, has been chosen to play for the North team at the FCA girls basketball game that tips off at noon Saturday at ACU’s Moody Coliseum.

SHS golfers honored for outstanding play

Sweetwater High School golfers were honored at a recent banquet for their outstanding play during the spring season.
Pictured (from left) are Amy Witt, who was honorable mention all-district; Molly Fincher, who was honorable mention all-district; Rachel Hunt, who was a regional qualifier; Hayley Stewart, who was a regional qualifier; Elise Lawrence, who was all-district; Alex Gomez, who was all-district; Alex Castillo, who was all-district and a regional qualifier; Mason Andrews, who was honorable mention all-district; and Ryan Mercer, who was all-district.

Bennett receives all-district honorable mention

Dylan Bennett of Sweetwater has received all-district honorable mention in baseball. His honor was inadvertently left out of a story about Sweetwater’s all-district players that ran in Tuesday’s paper. Bennett was Sweetwater’s starting shortstop as a sophomore in his first year on varsity. He was one of five players to earn honorable mention along with Gabe Medellin, Shawn Campbell, Stephen May and Cole Maxwell. Sean Morrow, Greg Aiken, Willie Norman and James Clift were first team all-district picks for Sweetwater.

Mustang baseball camp set

A Mustang Baseball Camp will be held June 11-14 at the high school baseball field next to Newman Park.
The first session for stu-dents entering grades 1-5 will be from 9-10:15 a.m. each day while the second session for students enter-ing grades 6-9 will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Persons will need to reg-ister at least 15 minutes before each session begins on Monday, June 11. The cost of the camp is $40, which includes a T-shirt.
This year’s camp will em-phasize working on funda-mentals, hitting, defense and pitching and will be led by the Sweetwater High School baseball coaches.

SHS tennis camp slated

A Mustang Tennis Camp will be held June 12-14 at the Sweetwater High School tennis courts for students completing grades 2-6.
Camp hours are 8-11 a.m. each day. Students need to bring their own tennis racquet and water bottle and are strongly encouraged to wear sun screen. Cost of the camp is $25. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated.
Registration forms should be turned in to the middle school or high school office.

Several Mustangs receive all-district baseball recognition

The 2012 Sweetwater High School baseball team had 11 of its players receive all-district baseball honors in a season that saw them compete for the playoffs until losing a one-run lead in the last inning of their final game with Big Spring.
Pitcher James Clift, first baseman Greg Aiken, catcher Sean Morrow and outfielder Willie Norman made the first team. Aiken also made the first team in 2011. Morrow and Norman were named first team after being second-team picks in 2011, and Clift was also named to the all-district first team for the first time.

Banquet speaker

Roscoe native Dan Hunter served as guest speaker at the sports banquet. Hunter is currently a professor at Tarleton State University in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences.
He was previously chief executive office/manager of the Southwestern Peanut Growers’ Association. Prior to that, he served as the government relations representative for the National Cotton Council, and also worked as a primary legislative staff member for former Congressman Larry Combest as well as for Congressman Fred Grandy.
