Highland’s boys are back in the playoffs from District 13-1A, Division II after their 75-31 win over Hermleigh. Jacob Richburg scored 25 points to pace the Hornets (6-2 district, 13-7 overall). Highland remained in second place with Tuesday’s win. It is one game ahead of third-place Roscoe (5-3), which edged Loraine 56-52 in its 13-1A, Division II game Tuesday.
Roscoe, which needs one more win for a playoff spot, was paced by Cutter Davila’s 19 points and Jesus Leanos’ 16.

SW girls set to play tiebreaker in C-City; Plowgirls set playoff

February 5, 2014

The Sweetwater and Big Spring girls basketball teams are fit to be tied for the second straight year.
Once again, they will have to meet for a third time to remedy the problem.
Sweetwater and Big Spring, who both finished 4-6 in District 4-3A play after the regular season wrapped up on Tuesday, will meet at 8 p.m. Friday in Colorado City for a district tiebreaker to decide the No. 4 (fourth place) and final playoff berth.

SW girls not done despite loss to Wylie

February 5, 2014

ABILENE — Going into Tuesday’s game at Wylie, the Sweetwater girls basket-ball team knew it might be playing not only for the final time against Wylie as a district opponent, but for the final time this season.
But after losing 61-28 to the No. 4 Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Mustangs got good news. Big Spring also lost to Midland Greenwood, 47-36, forcing a District 4-3A tie-breaker to decide the No. 4 playoff spot later this week.

‘Stangs still hold on to playoff hope after big defeat by Bulldogs

February 5, 2014

ABILENE — Despite a 82-39 loss Tuesday at Wylie and a 2-6 district record, Sweetwater’s boys basketball team can still make the playoffs.
But they probably can’t afford another loss in either of their last two games.
Sweetwater stayed within striking distance of Wylie — the No. 5 team in Class 3A — for most of the first half but was overwhelmed over the final two periods.
Wylie, 23-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in district play, was up 7-0 before the Mus-tangs scored.

Mustangs to start season with unfamiliar opponents

February 4, 2014

The 2014 football schedule for Sweetwater High School, which was released today by Mustang head football coach Shane Mobley following Monday's biennial realignment by the University Interscholastic League, is a blend of the familiar and the unfamiliar.
It also includes just two teams that had a winning record this past season, although six went to the playoffs in 2013.
Of the 10 games on Sweetwater's 2014 schedule, five will be against schools the Mustangs faced the past two years — current District 4-3A foes Midland Greenwood, Monahans and Snyder along with Andrews and Breckenridge.

SW girls hope Wylie isn’t final game

February 4, 2014

Due to UIL realignment, tonight will mark the last time for at least two years that the Sweetwater girls basketball team plays a district game against Wylie.
The Lady Mustangs (4-5 district, 9-13 overall) — who will make the trip to Wylie (9-0, 24-5) for a 6:15 p.m. tipoff — just hope it won’t also be their final game of the season.
