SNYDER — After prod-ucing 30 runs over its last three games, Sweetwater’s offense was held in check by Snyder pitcher Taylor Munkres on Friday.
Fortunately, Sweetwater’s James Clift was doing just as well for the Mustangs as he got the pitching win in a 3-2 victory over the Tigers.
SNYDER — The expected softball showdown Friday between District 4-3A’s top two teams turned into a one-sided affair instead.
And unfortunately for Sweetwater, it was the host Lady Tigers who dominated as they won, 10-0, to take the outright district lead.
Snyder is now 5-1, while Sweetwater falls to 4-2.
The Lady Mustangs had defeated Snyder 11-8 in the District 4-3A opener March 15 in Sweetwater, helped largely by a 10-run inning.
But in the rematch, they were shut out for the first time all year on just one hit, a fourth-inning single by Kelsi Crosson off Snyder’s Adrianna Hernandez.
ABILENE — The Sweet-water High School boys golf team is now in fifth place entering Tuesday’s final round of the District 4-3A tournament after a 17-shot improvement in its score Friday at Abilene.
Sweetwater went from a 352 to 335 for a 687 total, moving up one place from the first round. But it lost ground to the top two teams, Big Spring (596) and Wylie (614). Only the top two teams and top two individuals not on qualifying teams advance to regionals.
The Sweetwater High School and Sweetwater Middle School girls competed recently at track meets held in Colorado City and Big Spring, respectively.
Individual results follow:
Kendra Crosson — 1st in 200 dash (26.8)
Suede Shirley — 3rd in 200 dash (27.08)
Abby Garcia — 6th in 200 dash; 6th in high jump
Kayla Chowning — 4th in high jump
Zanesha Collins — 6th in discus
Cierra Knox — 4th in shot put
800 relay — 2nd (Kelsi Crosson, Kendra Crosson, Garcia, Shirley)
8TH GRADE GIRLS
Kensi Chowning — 2nd in discus, 2nd in shot put, 4th in high jump
Highland hosted a junior high track meet Thursday with Roscoe and Blackwell teams also competing.
Roscoe and Highland will be in Roscoe for their district meet on Thursday, and Blackwell hosts its district meet also set for Thursday.
Highland, Blackwell and Roscoe athletes who placed at Highland’s meet follow:
1. Team totals — 5. Roscoe 43; 6. Highland 38; 9. Blackwell 18.
1600 — 1. Braiden Moore, Roscoe, 4:02.20; 3. Clyde Dent, Highland, 4:20.70.
2400 — 3. Braiden Moore, Roscoe, 9:12.20.
Athletes in softball, base-ball, golf and tennis see district action for Sweetwater today, while Highland will be hosting a pre-district meet which Roscoe and Blackwell will also attend.
And that will be just the start of very busy weekend for Nolan County athletes as district golf and tennis are also on tap Saturday, plus the junior high teams’ season-ending district meet.
Sweetwater’s softball and baseball teams go to Snyder for key District 4-3A games when they return from a seven-day break today.
The action begins with Sweetwater and Snyder battling for the outright 4-3A lead in the softball race at 5 p.m. Both have 4-1 records and a one-game lead over two teams after the first half of district play. Right behind are Greenwood and Big Spring, each at 3-2. Sweetwater beat Snyder, 11-8, when the teams began district play on March 15 at Sweetwater. The Lady Mus-tangs’ only district loss has been against Greenwood.
Kaleb Hoover of Sweet-water has been named to the Abilene Reporter-News All-Big Country boys bas-ketball team for Class 3A, while his Sweetwater teammate Dylan Bennett received honorable mention to the Class 3A boys team.
Hoover, a 6-1 junior for-ward, also made the team as a sophomore. He averaged 16.4 points and eight rebounds in earning first team all-district honors. Hoover as a sophomore was named the district newcomer of the year. This season, he shot 41 percent from the field and 61 percent at the line after getting a late start due to an injury.
Sweetwater High School’s junior varsity softball team, pictured here, returns to action at approximately 7 p.m. Friday.
The team will play at Snyder immediately after the varsity game at 5 p.m., with both games to be played at Snyder. The varsity baseball team will also play at Snyder on Friday, with the contest set to begin at 7 p.m., while the JV baseball team hosts Snyder at noon Saturday.
