Banyard plays 3rd exhibition contest

NEW ORLEANS — Ex-Sweetwater High and University of Texas-El Paso star Joseph Banyard, now with the New Orleans Saints, played in his third exhibition game Friday as the Saints lost to the Jack-sonville Jaguars 27-24.
Banyard, who recently signed a three-year con-tract with the Saints as a rookie free agent, finished the game with 6 yards rushing on two carries and also caught two passes for 17 yards. It was the first time Banyard had not led the team in rushing during exhibition play. Banyard has rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries and also caught four passes for 20 yards in three games.

Plowboys hold first scrimmage on new turf

Roscoe’s football team played its first of two scrimmages on Friday, when it hosted Haskell on Plowboy Field’s new turf which was installed after last season.
The scrimmage was delayed almost an hour due to threatening weather in the area but still drew a good turnout.
Also, Blackwell held its first scrimmage Friday when the Hornets traveled to Hermleigh while both Sweetwater and Highland were scheduled to hold their first scrimmages Saturday.

Mustangs get 1st test Saturday at the Bowl

After leading his players through two weeks of prac-tices and a week in pads, Shane Mobley is eager to see how his players do when they get in some licks against outside competition.
The first-year Sweetwater head football coach and his staff will finally get that chance Saturday, when the Mustangs host Wichita Falls Hirschi in their first of two preseason scrimmages.

More experience could mean more wins at Blackwell

A very young and inexperienced Blackwell football team didn’t win any of their nine games on their field a year ago, though they did get a victory by forfeit.
But almost everyone is back, and the participation rate is high this season, with 21 of the 24 eligible boys signing up. Four of them — Ted Chambliss, Kaleb Edwards, Jayden Jones and Mason Magness — were all-district in 2011.

Spikers start road swing after getting split in dual match

After coming away with a split in its dual match here Tuesday, the Sweetwater High School volleyball team will begin an extended stretch of time on the road today by playing a single match at Abilene Cooper — followed by a two-day tour-nament at Canyon Randall to complete the weekend.
Sweetwater (2-1) dropped its opening match to Seminole on Tuesday in four games by scores of 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 20-25.

Youthful Highland hopes to be a contender

After advancing to the six-man state championship game three years ago, Highland has fallen on hard times of late, going just 5-14 the past two seasons.
But there were signs late last year that the Hornets were on the verge of turning things around. In fact, a muffed two-point kick at the end of a 43-42 loss to Aspermont in the next-to-last week was all that kept Highland from making it back to the postseason.

Lady Stangs rally to win opener in 5

Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team faced an early gut-check in its season-opening match here Monday, and passed it with flying colors with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over San Angelo Grape Creek.
The Lady Mustangs play two more matches tonight at home against Seminole and Water Valley, with the first match at 6:15 p.m.
Water Valley is the defending Class 1A state champion and after graduating just one player from that team, the Lady Wildcats enter this season ranked No. 1, while Seminole is also considered a playoff-caliber squad.

10-under team 2nd at Abilene tourney

This local 10-and-under baseball team recently won second place at a tournament in Abilene.
