SHS to hold football banquet on Dec. 12

November 29, 2011

Sweetwater High School will hold its annual football banquet Monday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
The tickets to this year’s banquet will be available for $10 each at the SHS field-house until noon on Dec. 8. SHS football players, cheerleaders and student trainers will not be required to buy a ticket. The junior varsity White and Red and varsity teams will be recognized for their hard work and dedica-tion this year, and cheer-leaders and student trainers will also be introduced and thanked. A highlight video will also be shown.

Mustangs win honors

Twelve Sweetwater High School football players have earned all-District 5-3A recognition for their outstanding play this past season.
Four were named to the first team — senior utility back Sam Nemir, senior tight end Gabriel Medellin, senior defensive lineman Mateo Gonzales and junior cornerback Nick Nemir, Sam’s younger brother.

SHS spikers are honored

Six volleyball players from Sweetwater High School have received all-District 5-3A recognition, with three named to the first team.
Sweetwater’s first teamers are Kathleen Campbell, who made it for the second straight year as a middle blocker; Kendra Crosson at outside hitter; and Suede Shirley at setter. All three are juniors. Shirley was named to the second team as a sophomore and Crosson was named as the district’s newcomer of the year.

Andrews boys topple Mustangs

November 23, 2011

One night after getting a dramatic win over Colorado City on a buzzer-beater by Taylor Jones, the 5-9 senior poured in a season-high 21 points while Sweetwater got off to a good start here Tuesday against Andrews.
However, Jones didn’t get a lot of scoring help as no other Mustang player was able to reach double figures, and the visiting Mustangs came away with a 59-41 win. The game was basically decided in the third quarter, when Andrews outscored Sweetwater 19-8 after leading just 27-22 at halftime.

Lady Stangs held in check by Ab. Cooper

A three-game gauntlet against Class 5A foes is finally over for the Sweetwater girls basketball team.
Tuesday’s 46-27 loss to Abilene Cooper was the Lady Mustangs’ third in a row after a 3-0 start. The Lady Coogs held Sweetwa-ter to just eight field goals and its lowest point total of the young season.

Highland gets split

November 23, 2011

Highland split a basket-ball doubleheader against Spur on Tuesday. The girls (4-1) won, 53-29, for their fourth straight victory but the boys (1-2) fell to Spur by a score of 37-27.
For the girls, Sierra Allen scored 20 points while Kara Hughey (16) and Beth Rich-burg (11) were also able to reach double figures. Jessica McCain had four and Lora Stewart two for Highland, which led 16-5, 30-10 and 35-16 at the quarter breaks.
