The Lady Mustangs lost the game to fall into a tie for fourth place in 4-3A, while the Lady Steers moved into third place in the stand-ings with the win.
Sweet-water will host Midland Greenwood this Friday to begin a two-game home-stand, the team’s final one of the season.

Boys see rally fizzle out

BIG SPRING — After a promising start, the Sweet-water boys basketball team found itself in an uphill bat-tle with Big Spring in Tues-day’s District 4-3A show-down.
The final result for the Mustangs was a 55-45 loss at the Steers’ gym which dropped Sweetwater (1-3 district, 12-3 overall) into a tie for fourth place with Greenwood with six games left. Big Spring (2-2, 9-10) took over undisputed third place in District 4-3A with the victory.

Girls’ struggles continue as B-Spring avenges loss

BIG SPRING — An en-couraging 2-1 start in district play for the Sweetwater girls basketball team began with the Lady Mustangs’ stunning 44-40 home win on Jan. 3 over Big Spring in their District 4-3A opener.
But Tuesday’s rematch at Big Spring saw Sweetwater unable to repeat that magic. Instead, the team suffered its third straight defeat.
Big Spring won big, 54-21, looking like a team that was state-ranked until recently. Sweetwater (2-4, 7-12) was held to 8-of-35 shooting by Big Spring, which improved to 3-3 in district, 16-7 for the season.

Baseball, softball signups slated to continue for S’water

Signup time is here for both baseball and softball.
Sweetwater Little League Baseball has its final signup for the 2014 season tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the Sweetwater Middle School cafeteria. Persons must bring payment, copies of three proofs of residency and a birth certificate to the signup. Sweetwater sub-varsity hoop results vs. Wylie

All four of Sweetwater’s sub-varsity high school bas-ketball teams lost to Wylie squads on Friday.
The JV girls (1-4) lost 32-21. Kensi Chowning had five points, Marissa San-chez and Jasmine Reddic four and Abby Garcia, Gab-by Fuentes, Payton Moore and Alaina Andrews two.
The JV boys lost to Wylie 55-25 as their district rec-ord dropped to 1-2. Desh-aun Williams led the team with eight points while Den-zell Moore had six, Hardy Escobar five, Michael Law-rence four and Mark Law-rence two.

SW and Big Spring can break ties today

The winner of tonight’s Sweetwater vs. Big Spring basketball games — both of which will be in Big Spring — has a chance to break out of a three-team deadlock for third place in District 4-3A.
Tipoff begins at 6:15 p.m. with the girls game, where Sweetwater and Big Spring are both 2-3 in district. And the boys contest between Sweetwater and Big Spring at 7:30 p.m. pits teams that are 1-2 in district play.
On the girls side, Sweet-water and Big Spring are tied with Snyder, which plays at Wylie (5-0) tonight.

Lifters are 1st

Sweetwater opened its 2014 powerlifting season on Thursday by placing first in the boys and girls divisions at Big Spring’s meet.
The Sweetwater boys had 36 points, barely edging out second-place Coahoma’s 35 and Big Spring’s 32, who both had more individual weight class winners than Sweetwater.
Meanwhile, the Sweet-water girls scored 46 points to easily beat out Lamesa, which placed a distant second with just 22 points.
Austin Marlett was the only weight class winner for Sweetwater’s boys, lifting 1,055 pounds in the 181-pound class.

Four area squads win

On Friday, the Highland and Roscoe boys basketball teams won to stay in a second-place tie in District 13-1A. The Highland girls also won to maintain their 13-1A lead over Roscoe. The Plowgirls got a forfeit win on Friday over Loraine, which has cancelled its entire district season.
