Eastern tops Rangers 13-0

ABILENE — The District 5 Major League title game was tied 0-0 through two innings Thursday. But Abilene Eastern’s Nationals got three third-inning runs, and cruised from there to a 13-0 victory over Sweetwater’s Rangers at Cal Young Park.
Sweetwater’s only hit was Rylan Hayes’ double, a booming drive to centerfield that led off the second inning. He was stranded after moving to third due to three straight strikeouts.
Though it was 0-0 at the time, the Nationals seized control. After three runs in the third, they pulled further ahead with two runs in the fourth to make it 5-0.

ABILENE — Sweetwater’s Rangers took advantage of two critical mistakes by Abilene Eastern’s Braves to score the go-ahead fifth-inning run Wednesday in the teams’ District 5 Major League (11-12) semifinal.
Then Reese Hayes retired the last six hitters in order to complete a 6-5 win for the Rangers that sent them into the title game at 7 p.m. today. Hayes’ twin brother, Rylan, scored the go-ahead run for the Rangers following a passed ball and a throwing error that went over the third baseman’s head by Eastern’s catcher in the top of the fifth inning.

Future summer camps

A Lady Mustang Soft-ball Camp will be held June 9-12 at the Jerry Collins Softball Complex for students who have completed grades K-8. Camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35. Campers should be pre-registered.

Several young athletes from Nolan County are honing their skills at summer sports camps being held this week.
Sweetwater and Roscoe are holding basketball camps, and a baseball camp is being held at Sportsman’s Park.

Rangers stay alive; 3 other teams ousted

The Major League (11-12) Rangers were the only local team to avoid elimination Monday in District 5 Little League tournament action,
The Rangers were a 10-9 winner over Wylie’s Astros in their game at Wylie. The victory means Sweetwater will advance to face Clyde’s Horned Frogs beginning at 8 p.m. today at Abilene’s Cal Young Park, with the winner playing in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the same location.
If the Rangers win their next two games, they will play for the Major League title at 7 p.m. Thursday, with the title game also at Cal Young Park.

Four Sweetwater LL teams advance on 1st day

Sweetwater batted .500 on Saturday’s opening day of District 5 Little League tournament play, as four of its eight teams in action won their games to advance to today’s second round.
Sweetwater had two win-ning teams in Major League (ages 11-12) and one each in Minor League (ages 9-10) and Junior League (ages 13-14). Eliminated were two teams in Minor League and one each in the Major League and Junior League.

Sports camps

A Lady Mustang Bas-ketball Camp will be held June 2-5 at the Sweetwater Middle School gym on 305 Lamar Street. The camp is for students who have completed grades 2-8. The camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35 which includes a T-shirt. A concession stand will be available. The camp’s goal is to improve players’ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.

Aiken chosen for THSBCA game

Sweetwater’s Greg Aiken has been chosen by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association to play in an upcoming all-star game this summer.

Sweetwater’s Abby Garcia has been named to the all-District 4-3A second team in softball as an outfielder. She is a sophomore. Also, junior Cierra Knox and sophomore Naomi Gonzales both received all-district honora-ble mention.
