Wylie uses big plays to hold off SW

October 11, 2011

ABILENE — Sweetwater picked a good time — Fri-day’s District 5-3A opener at Wylie — to play its best game of the 2011 season.
Unfortunately, the Mus-tangs still weren’t too happy at the end. That’s because the Bulldogs were still able to pull out a 20-15 victory despite running 31 fewer plays than Sweetwater.
And that wasn’t the only statistic the Mustangs led in. Coach Craig Slaughter’s club racked up 11 more first downs (21-10) and 47 more yards (322-275) in the con-test than Wylie and had just one turnover, the same as the Bulldogs.

District play starts tonight

October 7, 2011

The all-important district season finally starts tonight for Sweetwater and Roscoe, while Blackwell and High-land have two more weeks before playing their first of just three district contests.
Sweetwater goes to Wylie for a District 5-3A matchup of teams with 3-3 records.Tonight’s contest will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Wylie.
Sweetwater will be trying to break out of its two-game losing streak, while Wylie ended a two-game skid by beating Lubbock Estacado last week. Sweetwater is also seeking its first district win in nearly two years.

Mustangs go to Wylie to start district

October 6, 2011

The non-district portion of the schedule is finally over. On Friday, the serious part begins as Sweetwater and Wylie match identical 3-3 records at 7:30 p.m. at Wylie — with the hope of going 1-0 in District 5-3A and taking an important step toward a playoff berth.
For Sweetwater, this will also be a chance to take a step toward re-establishing itself as a district contender for the first time in three years. The Mustangs have just one district win since 2008. So a victory, especially over a perennially-tough Wylie squad, would be huge for the program.
