Lady Stangs lose at B’wood

BROWNWOOD — The Sweetwater volleyball team came close to getting its first district win Friday, but instead lost to Brownwood in four games by scores of 24-26, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-25. Sweetwater fell to 0-2 in district and 16-16 overall, while Brownwood is 2-1 and 10-13 and just one-half game out of the district lead. More infor-mation on Friday’s match will appear in a later story.

Area six-man squads fall to unbeaten teams

The two six-man football teams from Nolan County both faced unbeaten teams Friday in non-district play.
Highland hosted Gordon and the Hornets (2-4) fell by a score of 62-56, while Blackwell lost to Trent 65-16 to stay winless (0-6). Trent and Gordon are both 6-0.
Unfortunately, the Sweet-water Reporter was unable to get additional information by Sunday’s deadline on both six-man games.

The Sweetwater Middle School Colt tennis team recently played a match at Big Spring. Individual winners include the following:

Marc Butler won 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker); Christian Ulbrich won 6-4; Tyler Stacy won 6-3; Mitchell Madden won 6-1; Alex Castillo won 6-2.
GIRLS SINGLES
Brilee Kenny (7th grader) won 6-2; Crystal Foust (7th grader) won 6-4.
BOYS DOUBLES
No. 3 team (names were not given) won 6-4.
MIXED DOUBLES
Brook Hefner and Marc Butler won 6-1.

Sweetwater vs. Midland, Part 2

Sweetwater doesn’t start district play until next week, but should get an idea of what to expect this Friday when the Mustangs make a second straight trip to Midland to take on perennial private school TAPPS power Midland Christian.
It will also be a chance for coach Craig Slaughter’s team to get some redemption for this past Friday’s heartbreaking 28-26 loss to Midland Greenwood, and be in a much more positive frame of mind when it kicks off district Oct. 7 at Wylie.

Tennis team loses tri-match

Sweetwater High School’s tennis team lost a tri-match against Midland Christian and Andrews on Saturday in Midland. The team is at Snyder today starting at 4 p.m., and travels to San Angelo for a quad match on Saturday.

ANDREWS — After losing its 5-3A opener in Big Spring, Sweetwater’s volleyball team went to Andrews Tuesday for its final non-district match of the season and lost in three games by scores of 20-25, 17-25, 22-25.

Football player of the week

September 28, 2011

Kaleb Hoover is the Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater. Hoover, a 155-pound sophomore wide receiver, had five catches for 57 yards in a 28-26 loss to Midland Greenwood Four of Hoover’s catches were in the fourth quarter, including two first-down receptions on the team’s final scoring drive that came in the last 43 seconds.
