Water Valley routs Blackwell

August 30, 2011

MCCAMEY — Water Valley needed just one half of football to defeat Blackwell Saturday as it cruised to a 78-6 victory at the West Texas Six-Man Shootout.
Water Valley, in its first game under ex-Highland coach Karry Owens, enjoyed a 46-6 advantage at the end of the first period and added 32 points in the second stanza to end the game due to six-man’s 45-point mercy rule.
Jayden Jones scored the only Blackwell points on a 3-yard run in the first quarter. He was the Hornets’ leading rusher with 30 yards on seven carries and also caught a 36-yard pass.

Roscoe quarterback Dillon Freeman is pictured in action during the team's season-opening football game. The Plowboys began on Friday at Albany and lost to the state-ranked Lions 57-7. Roscoe will try to regroup when the team takes on Hawley at Sweetwater’s Sammy Baugh Classic at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Highland will travel to Loraine on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Hornets began Thursday and lost 24-8 to Bryson at the “Rumble in the Jumble” Classic in Trent.

‘D’lightful start — SW blanks Vernon

August 27, 2011

For the second straight week, Sweetwater’s offense had a monster, clock-eating scoring drive when the Mustangs opened their season Friday against the Vernon Lions.
Sweetwater took 18 plays to go 69 yards, leading to Ryan Linebaugh’s 1-yard touchdown run with 11:13 left in the second quarter that put his team up 7-0.
But, with the exception of another great showing by the Mustangs’ new kicker, Tadeo Canon-Masjoan, the offensive highlights after that were few. That meant Sweetwater’s defense had to step up to the challenge, and did it ever.

Plowboys can’t stay with Lions

August 27, 2011

ALBANY — The Roscoe Plowboys hit the road to face a very tough Albany team Friday in its season opener, and the Lions rolled to a 57-7 win.
Albany, a top-10 team in most preseason polls, was ahead 28-0 after one quarter and never looked back. Five players accounted for the Lions’ eight touchdowns, seven of them on long-distance plays of at least 29 yards.

Highland falls to Bryson

August 27, 2011

TRENT — The Highland Hornets put up a respecta-ble defensive effort in their opening game with Bryson on Thursday, but managed just one score as the Cow-boys won the contest 24-8.
Highland got its touch-down on Tyler Falcon’s 3-yard run in the first quarter. Steven Tester kicked the PAT to tie the game at 8, but the Hornets didn’t score again. Meanwhile, Bryson came back with two more touchdowns to seal the win. The game was played at Trent as part of the Rumble in the Jungle Classic.

Roscoe and Blackwell start out with tough road contests

August 26, 2011

The Roscoe Plowboys and Blackwell Hornets are both entering this season with several young players who have little or no varsity experience, but neither team will be getting a break in their opener.
Roscoe, which has just four seniors on its 31-player roster, travels to Albany tonight for its opener that will kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Mustangs are eager to get rolling vs. Vernon

August 25, 2011

The stakes aren’t as high as they were a few years ago when they met regularly in the playoffs, but Friday’s 7:30 p.m. season opener at Mustang Bowl will still be a big deal to both Sweetwater and Vernon.
The two perennial foot-ball powers have fallen on hard times of late, so a victory will give hope for better things to come this season.

Highland begins new era at Trent

August 25, 2011

Highland will debut the Jeff Shelton era at 7 p.m. today when the Hornets begin their 2011 football season by taking on the Bryson Cowboys in Trent.
The game kicks off the fourth annual “Rumble in the Jungle” classic that will feature six games over a three-day period. High-land will be considered the home team tonight.
Highland is trying to rebound from a 2-7 sea-son, and a win over Bryson could help spring the Hornets toward a much better year. Shelton was head coach at New Home the past two years before coming to Highland.
