SW, area teams at home

Nolan County’s eight area high school varsity basket-ball teams are all at home today when they resume play after participating in weekend tournaments that wrapped up on Saturday at various locations.
Sweetwater hosts Merkel in a doubleheader, starting with the girls game at 6:30 followed by the boys at 8 p.m. JV games will be played in both gyms at 5 p.m., with a freshman boys game at 6:30 and freshman girls game at 8. Also, both Roscoe teams host Baird; Highland’s teams entertain Albany; and the Blackwell girls and boys host Trent.

JV hoopsters win tourneys

Both of the Sweetwater junior varsity basketball teams captured tournament championships Saturday.
The JV boys (8-1) won all four games at Jayton as they defeated Forsan 38-29, routed Breckenridge’s freshman team 42-10, edged the Colorado City JV 20-18 in an overtime semifinal and defeated Breckenridge’s JV 39-30 in the title game.
The freshman boys (3-2) also played at Jayton but lost both of their games, falling to Colorado City 33-29 and to Crosbyton 44-43.

Eight Hornets are all-district

Eight Highland football players have earned all-District 6, Division I six-man recognition.
Those named to the first team for Highland were Tyler Falcon at running back and linebacker, Ron Covington on special teams and safety, Jordan Rowan at wide receiver and Steven Tester as a defensive lineman.
Those named to the second team for Highland were Covington at quarterback, Tester at running back, Garrett Stewart as a defensive lineman, Michael Hyde at utility back and linebacker, Peyton Howard at fullback and cornerback and Shelby Howard at wide receiver and as a utility player.

SHS sets football banquet for Dec. 12 at coliseum annex

Sweetwater High School will hold its annual football banquet Monday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex.
The tickets to this year’s banquet will be available for $10 each at the SHS field-house until noon on Dec. 8. SHS football players, cheer-leaders and student trainers will not be required to buy a ticket. The junior varsity White and Red and varsity teams will be recognized for their hard work and dedica-tion this year, and cheerleaders and student trainers will also also be introduced and thanked for their con-stant support. A highlight video will also be shown.

Mustangs win in OT; Lady Stangs lose two

Down by seven (33-26) at the end of three periods, the Sweetwater boys basketball team forced overtime and edged host team Coahoma, 43-42, on Friday to even its record at 1-1 at the three-day tourney. Taylor Jones’ 14 points and Kaleb Hoover’s 13 paced Sweetwater (3-4), which tied the game 37-37 at the end of regulation.

Sub-varsity girls get split vs. Clyde

The Sweetwater JV girls came away with a win, but Sweetwater’s freshman girls lost on Tuesday at Clyde.
The JV girls won, 21-10, as they improved to 6-1 this season. Sweetwater led 12-8 at halftime, and held Clyde to just two points after in-termission. Shaneese Brown and Maddie Jones had six points, Larissa Locklar and Karlee Murff four and Tay-lor McPherson one.
