Mustangs battle to draw in 1st scrimmage

August 13, 2011

WOODROW — While his team’s execution wasn’t as crisp as he’d hoped and the No. 1 unit failed to get into the end zone, Sweetwater head football coach Craig Slaughter was also encouraged by much of what he saw in the Mustangs’ season-opening scrimmage with Lubbock Cooper as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw on Friday.
And the final result was clearly much better than in 2010 when Lubbock Cooper dominated the teams’ scrimmage at Sweetwater, winning by a 4-0 count.

SW visits Cooper for 1st scrimmage

August 12, 2011

After two weeks of practices, Sweetwater’s football team finally gets to see how it will fare against outside competition when the Mustangs go to Lubbock Cooper today for their first scrimmage of the season.
Freshman and JV skirmishes will begin at 6 p.m., setting the stage for the varsity scrimmage at 7:30 p.m.
Sweetwater head coach Craig Slaughter said the format calls for the No. 1 units on offense and defense to get in 30 plays each tonight while the No. 2 units will run 20 plays apiece.

Youth will be served at Blackwell

August 11, 2011

Blackwell posted a sub-.500 record for the first time in three seasons a year ago, losing all three games in district play after a 4-3 start. To get back to their winning ways in 2011, the’ Hornets must rely exclusively on players with limited or no varsity experience.
Ten of the players on the roster are either freshmen or sophomores, while the other four are juniors. Five seniors who earned all-dis-trict recognition this past season have graduated.

Hornets try to regain sting

August 10, 2011

Highland has a new head football coach, Jeff Shelton, this year, and he inherits some good talent from former coach Karry Owens, who left Highland after 18 seasons and a 147-56-3 record to become the head coach at Water Valley.
Highland managed just a 2-7 record for Owens in his final year, but was practically starting over with a slew of youngsters after graduating most of the top talent from the 2009 squad that reached the state finals.

Lady Mustangs win opener

August 10, 2011

A year ago, the Sweetwater volleyball team opened its season with a straight-set loss against Seminole at home. But on Tuesday, Sweetwater hosted Seminole again and the result took a 180-degree turn.
Leading almost all the way, the Lady Mustangs swept the match by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.
Except for some struggles at the end of the first game and early in the second, Sweetwater was in control against Seminole while getting strong individual performances from several players.
