SHS golfers eye regional berths

April 7, 2011

Sweetwater High School’s golf teams are in strong contention for regional berths after completing the second 18-hole leg of their 54-hole tournaments.
The SHS girls are still in second place through two rounds of their District 5-3A tournament, which began last week at Sweetwater Country Club and continued Tuesday at Abilene’s Maxwell Golf Course with Wylie as host team.
Sweetwater shot 363, giving it a 733 total with one round to play and increasing its margin to 27 strokes over Wylie, which is third with a 760 total.

Mustangs get 1st district win

April 6, 2011

Though it is still strug-gling to score runs, Sweet-water’s baseball team final-ly has its first district win — thanks to the performance of its most reliable starting pitcher here Tuesday.
Senior Kris Mayes, in fact, hurled the second no-hitter of his high school career in a 3-2 win over Big Spring as the Mustangs (1-3) pulled out of a last-place tie with the Steers and kept their playoff hopes alive.

Lady Stangs fall

April 6, 2011

Because of failed scoring opportunities here Tuesday, Sweetwater’s softball team let a chance to be the undisputed second-place team in District 5-3A slip away as it lost to Big Spring, 5-1.
Sweetwater had eight hits, but produced just one run as the Lady Mustangs fell to 2-3 in district. Sweetwater is now in a three-way tie for second place with Snyder and Big Spring, with Wylie — which comes here Friday — just a half-game behind all three teams at 1-3.

They both began four-game homestands against district competition by losing to first-place squads from Brownwood earlier this week. Lions take advantage of mistakes to beat S’water

March 31, 2011

A malfunction with the lights at the Newman Park high school field prevented Sweetwater from playing its District 5-3A baseball game against Brownwood Tues-day night.
But when the game was finally played Wednesday, it was a different kind of Sweetwater malfunction that helped the Lions leave town with a 9-2 victory.
Four Mustang errors al-lowed Brownwood (2-0 in district) to score seven un-earned runs off Sweetwater pitcher Kris Mayes, who took the loss despite strik-ing out 12 in seven innings as his team fell to 0-2 in district and 10-12-1 overall.
