Another fantastic finish

GRADY — It’s probably not the way they prefer to do it, but the Highland girls basketball team has discovered a winning formula in the playoffs.
The Lady Hornets, for the second time in as many postseason games, found themselves trailing with one quarter to play Friday against Wink. But just as it had done three nights earlier against Robert Lee, Highland staged a furious fourth-quarter rally to pull out a 47-41 victory.

Lady Hornets play tonight

The Highland girls basketball team will resume its playoff run when it takes on Wink at 6:30 p.m. today in an area contest at Lenorah Grady. Stafford, Smith selected for all-star game June 4

Connor Stafford of Sweet-water and Caden Smith of Roscoe have been chosen to participate in the 12th annual Fellowship of Chris-tian Athletes Myrle Great-house All-Star Classic foot-ball game slated for June 4.
The game will be played at Abilene’s Shotwell Sta-dium starting at 7 p.m.

Hornets fall to No. 1 Bronte

The Blackwell boys bas-ketball team fell to No. 1-ranked Bronte, 59-30, in its season finale Tuesday.
Caleb Jeter had 17 points for the Hornets, who finished 10-19 overall, 3-11 district. Bronte is 27-2, 14-0. Caleb Magness had seven points and Mason Magness had six points.

Mustangs unable to tame the Tigers

With one of its most boisterous crowds of the year in attendance, the Sweetwater boys basketball team hoped to upset Snyder in its finale Tuesday at Mustang Gym and end on a high note, while denying the Tigers a chance at a playoff spot.
But the Mustangs, as has been the case throughout district play and for most of the season, simply didn’t have enough firepower to pull it off. Snyder, on the other hand, gradually warmed up as the game progressed and pulled away in the second and third quarters for a 68-38 victory.

Freshman boys end with win over Snyder; JV boys fall short

The Sweetwater freshman boys basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat Snyder, 63-48, in season-ending action Tuesday at Mustang Gym.
Kaleb Hoover had 17 points, Marquees Jenkins 15 and Dylan Bennett 14 for the Ponies, who trailed 11-10 after one quarter and led by just 22-19 at halftime. But Sweetwater (17-4 overall, 4-2 district) took charge with a 23-11 third-quarter run to open a 45-30 lead going into the final period. Tre Taylor had eight points, Deandre Gatson seven and Quentin Wetsel two.

Golfers 8th at B-Spring

The Sweetwater High School boys golf team shot a two-day total of 683 to place eighth out of 21 teams at the Big Spring Invitational tournament last weekend.
Individually, Ryan Mercer shot 75-75-150 for a sixth-place medalist finish. As a team, Sweetwater shot 344 on Friday and 339 on Sat-urday. Big Spring won the team title (622) followed by Abilene Cooper (632), Snyder (639), Wylie (640), Plainview (647), San Angelo Central (674), Midland Lee (682) and Sweetwater.

Stangs get sweep

Sweetwater’s baseball team beat Fort Stockton 8-0 and San Angelo Lake View 10-4 in its first scrimmage of the season Saturday at Big Spring. Kris Mayes cracked a two-run, first-inning homer against Fort Stockton and was also the starting pitcher, allowing just one hit in three innings before Sterling Reeves pitched a scoreless and hitless fourth. Sweetwater out-hit Stockton 14-5.

Lady Stangs lose opener to J-Ned

The Sweetwater softball team lost to Jim Ned, 8-2, in its season-opening game on Tuesday at Jim Ned.
The Lady Mustangs were held scoreless until a two-run sixth inning, while Jim Ned built a 6-0 lead by scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth and three runs in the fifth. Kendra Crosson and Taylor McKoy had RBI hits for Sweetwater and Suede Shirley finished 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, while on the mound McKoy pitched the first four innings and Alicia Finn worked the final two. McKoy finished with five strikeouts and Finn three, and McKoy allowed just three hits.
