10-under all-stars are state champs

The Sweetwater 10-under all-star softball team recently competed in a Texas ASA State C tournament at Wichita Falls and went undefeated as it brought home the state championship. Four SW teams to play in all-star tournaments

Four Sweetwater Little League baseball teams will compete starting Monday in District 5 double elimination all-star tournaments that will run through the first week of July.
Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-olds host their tournament at the Major League field. Also in the tournament are Merkel, Snyder, Clyde, Wylie and Abilene Southern. Sweetwater plays its first game at 6 p.m. Monday against Snyder. The tour-nament will wrap up with the championship game on July 4, with a second championship game to be played on July 5 if necessary.

11-under Reds win pair of tournaments

A local 11-and-under select baseball team, the Sweetwater Reds, is shown with its hardware after taking first place at tournaments earlier this month. The team is shown with the trophy that it won in Abilene. Also, the players also won a USSSA state tournament held in Midland, where the boys received rings as well as a plaque shaped like Texas. The Abilene tournament had a total of six teams participating, while the state tournament in Midland had 10 teams.

Tennis event starts Friday

Sweetwater will be hosting a Black Gold Tennis Circuit Challenger event Friday and Saturday, June 24-25. The entry fee will be $25 and the entry deadline is Wednesday, June 22.

The hours of the clinic will be 8-11 a.m. Students will need to bring a tennis racquet, water bottle and sun screen. The cost of the clinic will be $35. Many Sweetwater students attended the annual Mustang baseball camp this week. The camp ran from Monday, June 13, through Thursday, June 16, at the high school baseball field. Shown are students in grades first through fifth. This year’s camp emphasized working on fundamentals, hitting, defense and pitching and being led by the Mustang baseball staff. Head baseball coach is Roland Herrera.

A pair of Sweetwater baseball teams made up of 7- and 8-year-olds took first and third place, respectively, at a tournament held here on June 4-5.
The two local teams were the Select, which won first-place honors, and the Venom, which took third place at the event. The Brownwood Reds took second place in the tournament.
