Several area teams have key district games today

The first month of the new year is nearly over. That means the high school basket-ball playoffs are getting close, and over the next few weeks the postseason berths in each of the state’s districts will be decided.
While Sweetwater’s teams are off tonight, the other six Nolan County varsity squads will see action and three of them are still very much in the playoff hunt. In District 9-A, Division I, Roscoe’s teams have a doubleheader at Haskell while in District 11-A, Division II, Highland’s teams host Loraine and in District 12-A, Division II, Blackwell’s teams will host Paint Rock.

Girls powerlifters 2nd at Big Spring

Hornets lose 3-OT thriller to Robert Lee

The Blackwell boys bas-ketball team may not win a playoff berth this season, but the Hornets still gave their fans a memorable ef-fort Tuesday at Robert Lee.
Blackwell overcame a five-point deficit after three quarters to tie the Steers 44-44 at the end of regul-ation. Then it got really crazy as the Hornets forced three overtimes before losing, 59-55. Caleb Jeter had 25 points for Blackwell, which fell to 2-6 in District 12-A, Division II and 9-14 overall while Robert Lee improved to 4-4 and 12-9.

Snyder sweeps S’water

SNYDER — SHS basketball teams enjoyed a big night on Tuesday. But it was the Snyder High School squads who came away with victories as the host Tigers and Lady Tigers teamed up to sweep a District 5-3A doubleheader against Sweetwater.
Snyder’s girls improved to 2-3 in district (16-9 overall) with a 56-40 win, while the boys romped to a 71-33 victory over Sweetwater for their first district win.
For the Lady Mustangs, Tuesday’s defeat was a setback to their playoff hopes.

Lady Hornets, Plowboys pick up key victories

The Highland girls and Roscoe boys collected key district basketball wins on Tuesday.
The Lady Hornets are now 7-2 in District 11-A, Division II after crushing Ira, 62-27. Callie Sandus-ky’s 24-point effort paced Highland, which was ahead 13-1, 31-5 and 47-15 at the breaks.
Kara Hughey added 11 points for Highland, who maintained its half-game lead over Loraine for second place. The teams meet at Highland Friday. Sierra Allen had eight points, Beth Richburg and Shyan Womack six, Jessica McCain four and Lora Stewart three.

SW teams visit Snyder

While it’s true that neither Sweetwater or Snyder has had much success on the basketball court so far in District 5-3A., it’s nearly always interesting when the two schools face each other.
Fans will get a double dose of the rivalry today, as Sweetwater visits Snyder in a 5-3A varsity twinbill that starts with the girls game at 6 p.m. The boys contest is scheduled to tip off at about 7:30 p.m.

Powerlifters fare well at first meet

Both of Sweetwater’s powerlifting teams had good showings when competing at season-opening meets Thursday at Big Spring.
The Sweetwater girls scored 31 points in placing second to Abilene High out of 13 teams at their meet.

Highland, Roscoe teams place high at JH tourney

The host Highland teams and both Roscoe squads had top-three finishes in their respective divisions recently at Highland’s junior high basketball tourney.
The Highland girls won first place and Roscoe’s girls placed second, while Ira took third place and Trent won the consolation title.
In the junior high boys division, Ira won first place and Highland placed second, while Roscoe was third and Trent won consolation honors. Some of Roscoe and Highland’s game scores are listed on this page.
