Circling the bases

March 17, 2011

Sweetwater’s Alicia Finn smiles as she runs as she circles the bases following a home run that she hit at the Lady Mustangs’ tournament in February. Finn was one of several Sweetwater players who had big offensive games in a 16-8 win at Lamesa on Monday. The team begins district play on Friday when the Lady Mustangs travel to Big Spring for a 7 p.m. game.

Still, the Steers were able to overcome their lack of production by taking advantage of Sweetwater mistakes as they won, 9-5, with the help of nine walks, two hit batters, four errors and a few timely hits.

Shelton breaks coach’s record at Odessa meet

March 16, 2011

Jayci Shelton did more than just set a meet record with her time of 45.56 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles Friday at the West Texas Relays in Odessa.
The SHS senior’s winning time eclipsed the old record of 46.54 set in 2004 by her coach. Jessica Withrow was a high school star at Muleshoe when she set the previous Division II meet mark for the 300-meter hurdles, a mark broken Friday by Shelton. Losing the record, Withrow said, was “kind of bittersweet.”

The Lady Mustangs, who are 7-7 overall, are back at the Jerry Collins Complex on Thursday for their final non-district game against Levelland at 3 p.m. Sweet-water will then travel to Big Spring for its District 5-3A opener at 7 p.m. Friday.

Ending on a high note

March 14, 2011

ABILENE — After losing its first four games by a combined score of 39-13, the Sweetwater High School baseball team roared back in Saturday’s finale of the Abilene Invitational tour-nament to crush Wylie 11-1 and end up on a high note.
Thanks to a big nine-run second inning and the pitching of Sterling Reeves, who allowed just three hits, the Mustangs easily defeated a Wylie team that came in with three straight wins.
All nine of Sweetwater’s starters scored at least once in the contest. Reeves, Connor Stafford and Kris Mayes each had two RBI and Mayes had a double.
