Short-handed Mustangs can’t stay with Wylie

The Sweetwater boys basketball team unveiled a new lineup against first-place Wylie here Monday as a pair of recent JV callups, Ryan Linebaugh and Kyle McSherry, started for the first time. The Mustangs also got a 20-point effort for the second straight game from junior guard Taylor Jones, who had 22 after dropping a season-high 28 on Big Spring just two nights earlier.

Blackwell JH teams end season

Both Blackwell junior high boys basketball teams ended their seasons recently. The ‘A’ boys team finished as Zone 1 runner-up and was fourth overall in District 12-A, Division II with a 6-4 record.

Steers’ sweep leaves SW in a ‘bum’ mood to face Wylie tonight

Once the Sweetwater boys basketball team finally got back into action Saturday after a 10-day layoff, it faced the unenviable task of trying to contain a very talented Big Spring team and standout guard Luke Adams.
The Steers, as expected, won convincingly (85-60) at Mustang Gym and Adams was amazing, hitting six treys and scoring 47 points as Big Spring moved to 4-1 in district while Sweetwater — which hosts Wylie in a makeup game at 7:30 p.m. today — stayed winless (0-5) in District 5-3A.
Sweetwater, though, was a lot tougher out than the Steers probably expected.

Big lead vanishes, playoff hopes fade for Lady Stangs as Big Spring rallies for win

For the vast majority of the first half of Saturday’s game against Big Spring, the Sweetwater girls basket-ball team appeared to be firmly in control.
The Lady Mustangs — desperate for a win in order to maintain realistic hopes of a playoff berth — seized the early momentum against the only team they have beaten in district play. But Big Spring staged a second-half comeback to win, 61-56, at Mustang Gym.

Plowboys stay in playoff contention with easy W

The Roscoe boys basketball team is still in playoff contention in District 9-A, Division I after a 59-24 win over Rotan on Saturday.
The Plowboys (5-3 in district, 13-10 overall) are tied with Haskell for sec-ond place after getting 21 points from Caden Smith and 20 from Cody Graham against Rotan. Devan Cole had nine, Jesus Leanos four, Juan Solis three and Keeston Ford two and the defense held Rotan to sin-gle digit scoring in all four quarters. Roscoe will host first-place Stamford (7-0) on Tuesday before ending the regular season on Friday at Munday (4-4).

Weather affecting local sports

With more rough weather in the forecast today, quite a few Nolan County sports teams continue to see their planned events affected.
At press time this morn-ing, the Sweetwater varsity girls and boys basketball teams were planning to play their scheduled games against Wylie here today, though the times had not been officially announced.
However, the games are still in doubt and could very well be moved to another date, since Wylie has called off classes today.

SW, B-Spring will try again to play today

After the icy weather that moved in late Monday night forced the cancellation of their games here Tuesday, Sweetwater and Big Spring will try again to play their varsity doubleheader today. As of early today, the varsity girls game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Mustang Gym, followed by the varsity boys game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday’s JV and freshman games were not rescheduled.

Lifters shine at Lamesa

The Sweetwater High School girls placed first and the SHS boys placed second on Saturday at the Lamesa powerlifting meet.
The girls put on a domi-nant showing at Lamesa as Sweetwater’s 45 points more than doubled the 19 by Colorado City, which came in a distant second.

SHS opens homestand vs. B-Spring

Sweetwater High School’s basketball teams, who have been idle for the past week, are scheduled to be back on the court today when they play host to Big Spring at Mustang Gym — but only if the expected snowy and wet conditions outside allow it.
Both Sweetwater teams have two home games on their schedule this week, as Wylie is in town Friday.
