Stangs tip off district at Wylie

Starting today, the games that really count for the Sweetwater boys basketball team begin.
And no one can ac-cuse the Mustangs of easing into district play as they go to Wylie for their 5-3A opener that will tip off at 7:30 p.m.

ABILENE — Mike Welch — a two-time all-stater at Sweetwater High School who helped lead the Mustangs to a state championship in 1985 and later was a four-year starter at Baylor University — is among a group of 10 former athletes, coaches, officials and sports writers who have been selected to the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame.

Lub. Coronado names Jackson as its new coach

LUBBOCK — After spending the past two years in the Metroplex, ex-Sweetwater head football coach Kent Jackson has returned to his West Texas roots and a team known as the Mustangs.
Jackson, who coached at Sweetwater from 2001 through 2008 before taking a similar position at Frisco Heritage, was hired on Thursday as head coach at Class 5A Lubbock Coronado.

SMS boys win pair of titles

The Sweetwater Middle School seventh and eighth grade Red boys teams both won first place at Wall’s recent basketball tournament. Results of their games and individual scoring follow:

Lady Stangs lose close one

A Sweetwater team that came into its district opener against Snyder at Mustang Gym with a 15-10 record, nine wins in its last 11 games and high hopes of a playoff berth never quite found its rhythm Tuesday.
Instead, it was the visiting Lady Tigers who jumped to an early lead and was vir-tually in control all the way in a 46-43 victory.
Still, Sweetwater — which never led — was able to stay within striking distance and had a chance to win or at least send the game into overtime until the very end.

SW boys fall

A Sweetwater boys basketball team that has struggled to find a spark in recent weeks was simply no match for San Angelo Lake View here Tuesday.
The Chiefs launched two dominating runs — one in each half — en route to an 84-32 victory.
The first run turned an 8-7 Lake View edge into a 28-7 advantage midway through the second quarter, and the Chiefs’ lead stayed between 19 and 34 points until a basket by Sweetwater’s Dylon Adames made it 58-30 with 6:09 to play. Then it got real ugly, as Lake View scored 26 of the final 28 points.

Highland teams win; Plowgirls, Plowboys beaten

The Highland boys and girls won, but both Roscoe teams lost in area district basketball games Tuesday.
Highland’s teams are both on a roll in District 11-A, Division II.
The boys (2-2 in district) picked up their second straight victory with a 53-48 road win at Westbrook.
The girls (5-1, 14-9) are even hotter, picking up their sixth victory in their last seven games Tuesday with a 67-49 win.
Highland’s boys were be-hind 15-10 after one quarter but closed to within one, 25-24, at halftime.

Sub-varsity boys hoop teams defeat Lake View squads

Both of Sweetwater’s sub-varsity boys basket-ball teams won against San Angelo Lake View here Tuesday.
The JV boys (10-8) were 46-39 winners in their game, thanks to a second-half rally after the teams battled to a 20-20 standoff at halftime. Kyle McSherry led the Mus-tangs with 20 points and Cole Maxwell had 14. Ryan Linebaugh scored seven, Willie Norman three and Nick Nemir two.

SHS girls host Snyder in 5-3A opener; boys to entertain Chiefs in final tuneup

With a 15-10 record and just eight games left, the Sweetwater High School girls basketball team has a good chance for its first above-.500 season in five years. But what the Lady Mustangs would like even more is to reach the state playoffs for the first time since 2005. They can take a step toward that goal by beating Snyder (14-7) in today’s District 5-3A opener at Mustang Gym.
