The Sweetwater girls basketball team hasn’t been afraid of tough challenges this season. The Lady Mustangs (3-11) opened with games at Highland — currently ranked No. 4 in Class 1A — and San Angelo Lake View, ranked No. 20 in Class 5A, and have also played a home game against Abilene Cooper, a much-improved 5A squad.

S’water girls host Snyder in 2-4A tipoff

The Sweetwater girls basketball team hosts Snyder to begin District 2-4A play at 6:30 p.m. today.
Sweetwater’s boys, mean-while, travel to Monahans for a non-district game that tips off at 6:30 p.m. The girls’ game was moved back to its original time after be-ing switched to 5 p.m. ear-lier this week due to worries about bad weather coming to the area.

Sweetwater 7th and 8th grade ‘A’ girls will play at Clyde tournament through Saturday, Jan. 10.
All other Sweetwater middle school teams have an open date this week.
Roscoe junior high boys will host Hamlin starting at 5 p.m.
Roscoe junior high girls will play at Hamlin starting at 5 p.m.
Blackwell junior high teams will host Bronte star-ting at 6 p.m.
FRIDAY, JAN. 9
District openers: Sweet-water girls will host Snyder — JV at 5 p.m., varsity at 6:30 p.m.
Sweetwater boys will play at Monahans — freshmen and JV at 5 p.m., varsity at 6:30 p.m.

Tipoff is moved up for SW girls’ district opener

Because of the possibility of icy road conditions this weekend, the starting time for the Sweetwater varsity girls District 2-4A basketball opener against Snyder — originally set for 6:30 p.m. at Sweetwater’s Mustang Gym — has been moved to 5 p.m. The varsity game will be followed by a junior varsity girls contest between Sweetwater and Snyder if weather permits, said Sweetwater athletic director Shane Mobley.

Plowgirls and Lady Hornets get first district wins

Mustangs fall at L-View

January 7, 2015

SAN ANGELO — The Sweetwater boys were held to their lowest point total of the season on Tuesday by San Angelo Lake View in their first basketball outing of 2015. The end result was a lopsided 63-26 non-dis-trict defeat to the Chiefs in a game played at Lake View.

Sweetwater girls have an open date.
Roscoe teams will host Albany — JV girls at 4 p.m., JV boys at 5:15 p.m., varsity girls at 6:30 p.m., varsity boys at 8 p.m.
Highland JV and varsity teams will host Zephyr starting at 4 p.m.
Blackwell varsity teams will play at Water Valley starting at 6:15 p.m.

SW academic all-state honorees

January 6, 2015

Sweetwater 2014 football players Tyler Beasley, Ty Crain and Austin Watts have all received academic all-state honorable mention from the Texas High School Coaches Association. Also, Sweetwater’s Maddie Jones garnered academic all-state recognition in volleyball from the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
