Tickets for SHS Football Awards Banquet are available at fieldhouse through Feb. 18

Sweetwater High School’s Football Awards Banquet is set for Monday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the “Center” at Texas State Technical College.
Tickets for $12 each will be available at the SHS fieldhouse until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Meal tickets will not be sold at the door.

The Arizona Wildcats traveled to Tempe to face in state rival Arizona State for what they expected to be an easy game. Arizona State came into the game at the bottom of the PAC 12 at 3-6 in conference play. The Sun Devils came out firing as they shot 50% from the field (26/52) and 46.7% from 3 (7/15). Guard Bo Barnes paced the Sun Devils with 18 points including a perfect 8 for 8 from the charity stripe.

Highland now has two teams in playoffs

Highland is sending two teams to the playoffs after its boys team qualified by beating Hermleigh, 60-21, on Friday. Four players hit double figures as the Hor-nets improved to 5-2 in Dis-trict 12-1A and clinched no worse than the No. 3 spot.

Valiant effort falls just short for Lady ‘Stangs

LUBBOCK — A winless district campaign almost produced a breakthrough Friday, as the Sweetwater girls basketball team put itself in position for a win at Lubbock Estacado after trailing by six points in the fourth quarter. Down 40-34, Sweetwater used an 8-1 run, capped by two Lauren Jones free throws, to lead 42-41 with 1:07 left. But Estacado scored the next three points to regain the lead, and held on for a 44-42 win when Cierra Knox’s shot from the baseline went in and came right back out as the buzzer sounded.

No. 8 Mats wrap up berth with 83-41 win

LUBBOCK — No. 8-ranked Lubbock Estacado wrapped up a playoff berth on Friday in District 2-4A, with an 83-41 win over Sweetwater that put the Mustangs’ hopes of making the postseason on the brink.

Lady Mustang golfers win at Abilene

Members of the Sweetwater High School girls golf team pose with their hardware after a season-opening win this past week in the Wylie tournament at Abilene’s Diamondback Golf Club. Sweetwater shot 387, 20 shots better than second-place Graham’s one-day total.

More all-state recognition

The postseason all-state football accolades continue to mount for Sweetwater.
On Wednesday, five Mus-tangs received Class 4A all-state honors from the Texas Sports Writers Association, and Sweetwater’s Isaiah McGee was honored at two different positions.

Lady Hornets stop W’brook, wrap up No. 1 seed in 12-1A

The No. 4-ranked High-land girls basketball team clinched the No. 1 seed from District 12-1A with a 67-33 win over Westbrook on Tuesday. Highland (8-0 in district) led 20-6, 37-18 and 50-26 at the breaks to maintain its two-game lead over Ira, which got a forfeit win Tuesday over Loraine, with two to play. Highland, however, has already defeated Ira in both of their district meetings.
